Turkish Armed Forces Issued a Stern Statement to Mark Victory Day - One Day Before Gul Becomes President

Turkish Chief of General Staff General Yasar Buyukanit’s written statement came three days before the 85th anniversary of August 30 ‘Victory and Armed Forces Day’ in Turkey.

In his strongly worded message General Buyukanit said, “Sinister plans to destroy the unity of our people and the democratic, secular nature of our country are emerging every day in different shapes and forms. Turkish Armed Forces as it has in the past will continue to guard and protect Turkey as a democratic, secular, social state of law, without compromise.”

Gen.Buyukanit remembered the importance of the day that marked the victory at the end of the independence war out of which the Turkish Republic was born and reminded that it was Ataturk’s democratic revolution that abolished the sultanate and caliphate and brought the republic where sovereignty belongs to the people. Gen Buyukanit said that there are increasing attacks against the military from within and form outside the country, the aims of which are well known by the members of Turkish military. He said, “Our nation is watching the behavior of centers of evil who systematically try to corrode the secular nature of the Turkish Republic and the unity of our nation”.

Gen. Buyukanit added, “None of these threats and offenses can deter or tire the Turkish Armed Forces from its disciplined determination to follow the modern and dynamic Ataturk Doctrine that is based on science and knowledge – and which is far from being an ideology. This strength to resist exists in the very genes of the Turkish Armed Forces.”

This statement comes one day before the controversial election of Abdullah Gul, an Islamist, as president.
