A confused Tony Blair with bed memory

By Tony Blair

LONDON – There is only one view of the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby on a south London street three weeks ago: horrific.

But there are two views of its significance. One is that it was an act by crazy people, motivated — in this case by a perverted notion of Islam — but is of no broader significance. Crazy people do crazy things, so don’t overreact. The other view is that the ideology that inspired the murder of Rigby is profoundly dangerous.

I am of the latter view. Of course, we shouldn’t overreact. We didn’t after the July 7, 2005, attacks on London’s public-transport system. But we did act. And we were right to do so. Our security services’ actions undoubtedly prevented other serious attacks. The “Prevent” program in local communities was sensible.

Nigeria on the Brink

What Happens If the 2011 Elections Fail?

John Campbell  September 9, 2010

Summary:

The January 2011 elections could tear Nigeria apart. Is there anything the Obama administration can do to help the country avoid North-South conflict or a military coup?

JOHN CAMPBELL, the former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria from 2004 to 2007, is the Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. His book, Nigeria: Dancing on the Brink, will be published by Rowman & Littlefield in November.

The 2011 elections in Nigeria, scheduled for January 22, pose a threat to the stability of the United States’ most important partner in West Africa. The end of a power-sharing arrangement between the Muslim North and the Christian South, as now seems likely, could lead to postelection sectarian violence, paralysis of the executive branch, and even a coup. The Obama administration has little leverage over the conduct and outcome of the elections -- and if the vote does lead to chaos, Washington may no longer be able to count on Nigerian partnership in addressing African regional and security issues such as the conflicts in Darfur, Southern Sudan, and Somalia.

Turkse waarschuwt tegen familiehuwelijken

E.J. BRON - 29 AUGUSTUS 2010

Pakistan roots to Moscow attack?

By Syed Saleem Shahzad

ISLAMABAD - Monday's twin suicide attacks by female bombers in the Moscow metro system in which at least 38 people were killed and 64 injured were most likely planned and executed by people trained in Pakistan's tribal areas.

The head of the Federal Security Service (FSB - formerly the KGB), under whose headquarters the attacks took place, immediately pointed a finger at insurgents linked to the North Caucasus, saying the assumption was based partly on fragments of the suicide bombers' bodies.

"Our preliminary theory is that these terrorist attacks were carried out by terror groups linked to the North Caucasus region," Aleksandr Bortnikov said in reference to Muslim rebels waging a war of independence in Chechnya, a semi-autonomous region in the Russian Federation. Lees verder...

How Islam Breathed New Life into Slavery and the Slave Trade In Europe

by John J. O’Neill

In my newly-published book, Holy Warriors: Islam and the Demise of Classical Civilization, I argue at length that a great majority of the things commonly regarded as “Medieval” were in fact introduced to Europe from Islam, and that it was Islam, and not the Huns, Vandals and Goths, which terminated Classical Civilization, the rational and humane civilization of Greece and Rome. This civilization survived in Europe and in North Africa and the Near East until the seventh century, at which point it was terminated by the Muslim conquests.

Islam and the Rise of Violent Anti-Semitism

by John J.

By the late seventh century, and certainly by the eighth, Islamic ideas began to penetrate Europe, where they had a profound influence. European Christians, for example, began to think, for the first time, in terms of “Holy War,” an idea that would have been unthinkable in earlier centuries. There is strong circumstantial evidence that they began also to influence European thinking about the Jews. Lees verder...

How Muslim Piracy Changed the World

by John J. O’Neill

In my recently-published book, Holy Warriors: Islam and the Demise of Classical Civilization, I argued that it was the coming of Islam, in the mid-seventh century, which effectively brought the Classical Civilization of Greece and Rome to an end and initiated the Middle Ages. There I showed that the Muslim conquest of the Middle East and North Africa, from the 630s onwards, closed those areas to trade from Europe; and the consequent impoverishment of the latter led to the decline of the urban centers which had been the powerhouses of Classical culture.

But it was not war alone that brought this about. After all, from the beginning of history, empires had come and gone around the shores of the Middle Sea, yet trade and economic life had continued. With the rise of Islam, it is clear, this did not happen. All trade between the Christian West (and Christian East) and the newly-Islamic East was terminated, definitively. We know this for certain by the data brought forth by Henri Pirenne and others. Why did it happen? Did the Caliphs forbid merchants to trade with infidels?

Islam and the Dark Age of Byzantium

by John J. O’Neill

In his 1936 book, Mohammed et Charlemagne, Belgian historian Henri Pirenne argued in great detail that the Dark Ages of Europe began rather suddenly in the middle of the seventh century; and that this sudden and catastrophic decline in civilization was due to Islam’s blockade of the Mediterranean. Up to that time, Pirenne showed, there was no evidence of a decline in Classical culture. True, the Western Roman Empire as a political entity had disappeared in 476, but the literate, prosperous and urban civilization which we call “Classical” continued virtually uninterrupted. The Goths and other “Barbarian” peoples who ruled the provinces of the West after 467 did not try to destroy Roman civilization and civil society. Indeed, as Pirenne showed in great detail, they did everything in their power to preserve it. They adopted the Latin language, accepted Imperial titles from the Emperor in Constantinople, and minted gold coins with the image of the Eastern Emperor emblazoned upon them. Lees verder...

The erosion of women's rights in Egypt, illustrated

One point I touch on frequently in talks I've given over the years, especially when people ask me if Western influence will ultimately overwhelm the Islamic supremacist imperative in Muslim lands and extinguish the jihad, is that in the last 100 years the movement has been in the opposite direction: Western influence has been waning, and Sharia is on the rise.

And I've pointed out many times that while saw few hijabbed women on the street in Cairo in 1969, one saw few without hijab in 2009. And now comes an illuminating photo essay from Phyllis Chesler at Pajamas Media that illustrates just that. Two of the photos are above, and Phyllis has more here.

ENCINA NAVAN - 12 AUGUSTUS 2009

Islamwissenschaftler Nagel: "Islamophobie zulassen"

15.11.2009 | 19:02 |  ANNE-CATHERINE SIMON (Die Presse)

Lees verder...

Does Allah really value women?

Written by: Poma

“A Girl came out of man’s Rib. Not from his Feet to be walked on, nor from his head to be superior over, but from his side to be equal, under the arm to be protected and next to the heart to be loved.”

The above quote is really so refreshing, it really shows how to care and value the women.

In this article I will restrict myself to the above mentioned topic. Since my childhood I have always heard from my Muslim neighbors that in Islam the value given to women is unprecedented in all cultures or religions.  That no other religion gives that much value to the women as Islam gives. Being raised a non-Muslim from a predominantly Muslim country, and having seen with my own eyes about the plight of Muslim women (muslimahs) in this country of my birth, I deeply knew that what my neighbors were talking stems from the fact that they were and are still ignorant of other religions or cultures. I have no intention whatsoever of making a comparative analysis between Islam and other religions. I am here only to write about what the “only true” and the supposedly a “mercy” to mankind religion teaches us about women.

The Fatal Consequences of Danish Policy Towards Muslims

by Baron Bodissey

Our Danish correspondent TB sent us the original tip, along with this note:

Fjordman: To President Obama: Regarding Islam and Science

In his latest essay, Fjordman examines what Barack Obama called "civilization's debt to Islam."

US President Barack Hussein Obama’s speech delivered at Cairo University in Egypt on June 4 2009 contained so many half-truths, distortions or plain lies that it is almost impossible to deal with all of them adequately in a single essay. I will concentrate on the science part in particular here. Take this quote:

“As a student of history, I also know civilization's debt to Islam. It was Islam – at places like Al-Azhar University – that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe's Renaissance and Enlightenment. It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed. Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires; timeless poetry and cherished music; elegant calligraphy and places of peaceful contemplation. And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality.”

Muslim Brotherhood Debates Its Position on the Shi’a

MEMRI: Introduction : A pro-Shi’ite article by prominent Muslim Brotherhood official Yousef Nada has sparked a debate within the movement regarding its position on the Shi’a. In the article, which was published on the Muslim Brotherhood website, Nada argues that the Shi’a is not foreign to Islam, but constitutes a fifth religious school alongside the four Sunni schools. He also states that the conflict between the Shi’ites and the Sunnis is not religious but political in nature, and condemns Sunni Muslims who malign the Shi’a and its followers.

Nada’s article evoked criticism within the Muslim Brotherhood. Mahmoud Ghazlan, member of the Supreme Guide’s office, wrote that Nada’s opinions contravened the standard Sunni doctrine, and did not reflect the position of the Muslim Brotherhood, but only his own personal views. However, the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide himself, Muhammad Mahdi ‘Akef, intervened in the argument, stating that Nada’s views are largely consistent with those of the movement, and that the Sunni-Shi’ite conflict is indeed political rather than religious.

Islam: Governing Under Sharia

Author:
Lauren Vriens

March 23, 2009

Introduction

Sharia, or Islamic law, influences the legal code in most Muslim countries. A movement to allow sharia to govern personal status law, a set of regulations that pertain to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and custody, is even expanding into the West. "There are so many varying interpretations of what sharia actually means that in some places it can be incorporated into political systems relatively easily," says Steven A. Cook, CFR senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies. Sharia's influence on both personal status law and criminal law is highly controversial, though. Some interpretations are used to justify cruel punishments such as amputation and stoning as well as unequal treatment of women in inheritance, dress, and independence. The debate is growing as to whether sharia can coexist with secularism, democracy, or even modernity.

Morocco Cuts Off Diplomatic Relations with Iran, Accuses It of Spreading Shi'ism in the Country

On Friday, March 6, 2009, Morocco announced that it was cutting off diplomatic relations with Iran. The decision followed weeks of escalating measures between the two sides. The two countries had been at odds in the past over Morocco's grant of asylum to the Shah after the Islamic Revolution and its support for Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war, but the current rupture is the worst nadir in Moroccan-Iranian relations since these were normalized in 1991: [1]

Undiplomatic Behavior

The crisis between Morocco and Iran began as a secondary development in the recent row between Iran and Bahrain, which was set off when a senior Iranian official, Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri, referred to Bahrain as the 14th province of Iran. Morocco, like other Arab League members, issued a statement of support for Bahrain; in a letter to Bahrain, Moroccan King Mohammad VI described the Iranian statements as "abject" and expressed Morocco's support for Bahrain against the Iranian "threats." In response, Iran expressed sharp criticism of Morocco, and called in the Moroccan charge d'affaires in Tehran with a demand for clarifications; according to some reports, he was received by a civil servant from the foreign ministry staff rather than a high-level official, which the Moroccans interpreted as an insult. [2] In response, Morocco called in the Iranian ambassador on February 24 and gave him a week to provide an official response to Morocco's complaints, and on February 25 Morocco recalled its charge d'affaires in Tehran for consultations. When it became clear that no Iranian response was forthcoming, Morocco decided to cut off its diplomatic relations with Iran. [3]

Shift in British CT Strategy?

By Lorenzo Vidino

A few days ago the BBC aired a very interesting short documentary titled Muslims First, British Second. While covering issues of radicalization among segments of the British Muslim community, the documentary also suggests a major shift taking place within the British government’s counterterrorism strategy (known as Contest). A key part of Contest is Prevent, which has traditionally been defined as “stop[ing] people from becoming or supporting terrorists or violent extremists.” Since the focus has always been on “violent extremism,” British authorities have tolerated and, in many cases, supported organizations that, while considered “extremist” by many officials and policymakers, oppose violence inside the UK. As the documentary shows, organizations and individuals that preached that democracy is incompatible with Islam or expressed views on homosexuals, women and non-Muslims that clearly stand against what the vast majority of British citizens would deem acceptable and arguably undermine social cohesion, were often engaged as partners and received public money. Since they did not preach violence inside the United Kingdom many British policymakers believed that they could help the government in its Prevent strategy, swaying British Muslims away from “violent extremism.”

Geert Wilders and the Fight for Europe

Bat Ye`or        16 februari 2009

Does defending Western values constitute “inciting hatred”?

Britain has just witnessed the spectacle of a duly elected parliamentarian from another EU country, Geert Wilders of the Netherlands, being denied entry to the country because he constituted “a threat to public policy.” Wilders, after being detained briefly at Heathrow, was sent back to Holland — where he has further legal troubles. Three weeks earlier, a Dutch appeals court had ordered prosecutors to begin criminal proceedings against Wilders for “inciting hatred and discrimination” and “insulting Muslim worshippers” through his public statements and his 2008 film, Fitna. The order to proceed with the criminal prosecution resulted from pressure put on European states and on the UN Human Rights Council by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The OIC’s aim is to punish and suppress any alleged Islamophobia, around the world but particularly in Europe, and it has been a leader in creating the conditions that made the U.K.s Wilders ban possible. The Arab and Muslim World Condemns Human Rights Violations Only When Perpetrated by Non-Muslims

February 11, 2009 No. 2239
Arab Liberals: The Arab and Muslim World Condemns Human Rights Violations Only When Perpetrated by Non-Muslims

In response to the sweeping condemnation in the Arab and Muslim world of Israel's actions in Gaza, and the calls to prosecute Israeli leaders for war crimes, liberal Arab writers have accused the Arabs and Muslims of hypocrisy. The liberal website www.elaph.com has published two articles in this vein, by Egyptian liberal Kamal Ghobrial and by Kuwaiti liberal Fahker Al-Sultan. Both writers point out that the Arab and Muslim world is quick to express outrage over atrocities and human rights violations when Arabs or Muslims are victimized by non-Muslims, but turns a blind eye - or even condones the violations - when the victims are non-Muslims, or when Muslims prosecute their own brothers, as happened in Saddam's Iraq and is happening today in Darfur. The writers argue that this double standard stems from the problem of hatred for the other, and especially towards Jews. Al-Sultan emphasizes the role of the traditional Islamic mentality - and of political Islam, which exploits this mentality - in promoting inflexible xenophobic and antisemitic attitudes.

Europe is one of al-Qaida's highest priorities. If anyone needed any proof, events from last week were another wake-up call. Indeed, on Dec. 11 Belgium dismantled what authorities called "the Belgian branch of al-Qaida."

Two hundred and forty-two Belgian police officers took part in an operation that netted the arrests of 14 suspects, while French police also arrested two suspects tied to that network. One of the suspects is believed by authorities to be a likely suicide bomber who may have had plans to target an EU summit that was taking place in Brussels on Dec. 11.

Recent Rise in Sunni–Shi'ite Tension (Part I): Sunni – Shi'ite Hacker War on the Internet

By: L. Azouri *

Introduction

The conflict between Iran and Sunni countries - especially Saudi and Arabia Egypt - has escalated the tension between Sunnis and Shi'ites in the Muslim world. This escalation has had several manifestations:

I. Anti-Shi'ite Statements by Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi

Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi, head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, made harsh anti-Shi'ite and anti-Iran statements in the Egyptian and Saudi press. He warned against the danger posed by the spread of the Shi'a in Sunni countries, characterizing it as part of Iran's campaign for regional hegemony. He added that there was no possibility of rapprochement between Sunnis and Shi'ites, since there were fundamental principles of the Shi'ite faith that the Sunna could not accept. Despite strong criticism of his statements by Iranians and Shi'ites in the Gulf, Qaradhawi only reiterated them, refusing to either retract them or apologize.

Recent Rise in Sunni–Shi'ite Tension (Part II): Anti-Shi'ite Statements by Sheikh Al-Qaradhawi

By: E. Glass *

For several months now, Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi, head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), has been attacking the Shi'ites and Iran. In an interview with the Egyptian daily Al-Masri Al-Yawm, published September 8 and 9, 2008, he stressed the danger posed by the spread of the Shi'a in the Sunni countries. [1] Over the following weeks, he continued the campaign with additional interviews and communiqués in the Egyptian and Saudi press, in which he further condemned the Shi'a and also accused Iran of spreading it in order to realize its "imperialist aspirations."

Al-Qaradhawi's statements evoked numerous reactions in the Arab and Iranian press, most of them negative. Prominent Iranian and Shi'ite figures harshly criticized Al-Qaradhawi, and prominent Sunnis expressed only reserved support, tempered by concerns about possible exacerbation of the strife between Sunnis and Shi'ites. The Muslim Brotherhood movement was especially critical; although Al-Qaradhawi is regarded as one of its long-standing spiritual leaders, the movement leadership did not support his statements on the Shi'a and even explicitly renounced them.

Despite the criticism, and despite the fact that Iran offered to issue a formal apology for some of the harsh statements against him in response to his attacks, Al-Qaradhawi has refused to retract his statements against the Shi'a and Iran and to end the conflict with the Iranians. [2]

Recent Rise in Sunni–Shi'ite Tension (Part III): Sectarian Strife in Saudi Arabia

By: Y. Admon *

Tension between Sunnis and Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia has recently intensified. The Arab press reports that the Saudi authorities have taken discriminatory measures against the Shi'ites in the country, such as preventing the participation of Shi'ite representatives in the June 2008 Interfaith Dialogue Conference in Mecca, closing Shi'ite mosques, arresting senior Shi'ite clerics and persecuting Shi'ite pilgrims from Iran.

In addition, there have been anti-Shi'ite statements by Sunni clerics in Saudi Arabia, such as a June 2008 communiqué by 22 clerics accusing the Shi'ites of heresy and of trying to take over the Muslim world, which sparked considerable protest in Shi'ite circles. On the other hand, there were initiatives for Sunni-Shi'ite rapprochement, but these were condemned by Saudi Sunnis.

This report will discuss the policy of the Saudi authorities towards the Shi'ites in the country, initiatives of rapprochement between Sunnis and Shi'ites, and the attempts to prevent these initiatives.

Tunisians Angered by Screening of Film on Jewish Life in Nazi-Occupied France

The screening in Tunisia of a French film dealing with Jewish life in Nazi-occupied France has raised a storm of criticism. "Un Secret" ("A Secret"), directed by the French-Jewish director Claude Miller and starring the popular French-Jewish singer Patrick Bruel, was shown at the opening of the 15th annual Festival of European Cinema in Tunis.

Filmgoers Walk Out on Film that is "Too Favorable to the Jews"

Tunisian filmgoers walked out 30 minutes into the film "A Secret," which deals with a Jewish family in Nazi-occupied France, claiming that it was "too favorable to the Jews." Filmgoers told aljazeera.net, the website of the Al-Jazeera satellite TV station, that they wondered why Europe was so favorable to the Jews, and France in particular, whose president they described as the "pro-Jewish Sarkozy."

Speech Geert Wilders in Jerusalem

December 14, 2008

Thank you very much.

It's a privilege for me to be here in this beautiful city Jerusalem, the capitol of the only democracy in the entire Middle East. When I was a teenager I lived some years here in this city and after that I visited Israel more times than I can count. Israel: the only country in the region with a functioning parliament, a rule of law and free elections. The only country in the region that shares the values of our Western societies, in fact is one of the foundations of our Judeo-Christian identity.

We are here to voice our concern over the growing Islamisation of the West. We do this in this city, the city of David. The city that, together with Rome and Athens, symbolizes our ancient heritage.

Rebel actions shake up Dagestan

Publication time: 13 December 2008, 10:07

The frequency of rebel actions carried out by the members of the Sharia Jamaat in Dagestan increased drastically in late November and early December. Practically not a day goes by without news reports about armed assaults on police forces in the capital of Makhachkala and the towns of Khasavyurt, Buinaksk as well as others. These rebel actions in Dagestan are more than a series of isolated incidents that occur sporadically. Since early 2007, the rebels in Dagestan as well as in Ingushetia have adopted the tactic of daily harassment of representatives of the law-enforcement authorities, including the local branches of the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service (FSB).

The Hezbollah-Latin American Ties Become More Evident

have been traveling, but am somewhat surprised at how little attention the recent multi-country drug bust firmly tying Hezbollah to Latin American drug trafficking structures has received.

This is the clearest publicly-available case that shows how organized criminal groups and terrorist organizations are broadening and strengthening their links. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), responsible for several significant busts recently, led this one too.

The operation has been underway for several years, and has yielded a trove of information on Hezbollah’s ties to the Lebanese diaspora in Latin America, and the money ring that stretches through Venezuela, Panama, Guatemala, Hong Kong, the United States, Europe and Lebanon. The size of the network, the ability to function across religious and ethnic lines, and ability of all groups to profit from the criminal enterprise should give one pause.

Neuer Film der Macher von “Obsession”

The third JihadDie Produzenten von Obsession haben ihren neuen Film “The Third Jihad” vorgestellt.

Europe, Islam and Jihadism: establishing the distinctions

By Walid Phares

In my last European professional tour of June-July, I briefed and lectured Government officials, NGOs and European Union audiences in Rome, Berlin, Brussels, Paris and London. I will report on the main issues of discussions and areas of common interest in the near future. One of the hot issues of exchange has been the ability for Europeans (Government and public) to make a distrinction between the theology of Islam and the ideology of Jihadism. Although links have been established by the Jihadists themselves, especially in their indoctrination process, EU and local Government officials need to isolate the doctrinal political component from the theological web, for the prupose of drawing national security strategies. But the Jihadi lobby has been efficient in blurring the frontiers in the purpose of keeping authorities and the public at bay. This trend is now developing in the United States as well, particularly since the dissemination of the so-called "lexicon." The battle of ideas seems to be now taking place within the West, between two camps: those who want to isolate the ideology of Jihadism as a root of Terrorism and those who wish to camouflage it for a variety of reasons.

Divorce or Leave: Denmark Tells Iraqi

The man, who married twice while in his home country Iraq, was granted asylum in Denmark after working as an interpreter with Danish forces in the war-torn Arab country.

But in Denmark, he is being asked to divorce one of his wives because the law of the land does not allow polygamy.

The man has been given a one-month deadline by the Department of Family Affairs to divorce one of his wives or leave the country.

"It will be the second wife and it will be like a divorce," says immigration lawyer Mayanna Vilon.

Al-Qaeda Group Is Facing Setbacks Globally, CIA Chief Says

Less than a year after his agency warned of new threats from a resurgent al-Qaeda, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden now portrays the terrorist movement as essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and on the defensive throughout much of the rest of the world, including in its presumed haven along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

In a strikingly upbeat assessment, the CIA chief cited major gains against al-Qaeda's allies in the Middle East and an increasingly successful campaign to destabilize the group's core leadership.

Hizb ut-Tahrir's "double level"

By Lorenzo Vidino

Experts and government officials have long debated the real nature of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT). Formed in 1953 in Jerusalem, the group has now established a presence in virtually all continents. It defines itself as a “political party whose ideology is Islam” and openly seeks the restoration of the Caliphate as its main goal. The debate has always been on whether HT is a movement that simply aims at peacefully propagating its message, a "conveyor belt" for extremism, or a group directly employing violence. In many Muslim countries, particularly in Central Asia (see this report from the Uzbek government, for example) and the Middle East, the group is banned and authorities accuse it of direct links to acts of terror. HT members, on the other hand, have constantly denied their involvement in any violent act. “We consider that Islamic law forbids violence or armed struggle against the regime as a method to re-establish the Islamic State,” states the website of HT’s British branch (one of its largest).

How does Islam differ from secularism?

              Salam, Ahmad.

Thank you for your question.

The English word 'secularism' originated from the Latin secularis, meaning worldly, temporal (opposed to eternal).

Secularism can be defined as "the view according to which there exist no gods or purely spiritual entities. Sometimes the sense of the word is less strong, connoting something close to humanism, that is, that affairs of this world should be the most important concerns for ethics and human life.

Thus, while atheism is a form of secularism, not every secularist is an atheist. In popular usage, secularism often has the same connotations of immoralism that are imputed more strongly to atheism." (The Free On-Line Dictionary of Philosophy, Last accessed April 14, 2008)

Saudi cash seduction is Faustian pact

The lure of petro-dollars is irresistible to some but there are big strings attached, warns Merv Bendle

THE revelations over the past week that Griffith University aggressively pursued funds from the Saudi Arabian embassy to finance its Islamic studies unit illustrates a major problem facing all liberal democracies confronted with the vast reservoir of petro-dollars controlled by the Saudi Government.

``Saudi Arabia today remains the location where more money is going to terrorism, to Sunni terror groups and to the Taliban than any other place in the world,’’ according to testimony given by Stuart Levey, the head of the US Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, at a US congressional hearing on April 1, 2008. This money is channelled through complex networks of private, government and charitable organisations. Saudi Arabia also funds the ideological war within global Islam in support of Wahhabism, the sectarian and fundamentalist form of Islam that serves as the Saudi state religion. Lees verder...

The importance of the Belliraj network dismantled in Morocco

By Olivier Guitta

One month after the spectacular dismantling of what is called the"Belliraj" network in Morocco, the details and implications of this event are coming out little by little. The Croissant has compiled a full dossier, drawing on fifty open source articles. The full dossier is available to subscribers.

Here is an excerpt:

About 35 suspects were arrested on February 18. They lived in Morocco: Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Marrakech, Kenitra, Tangiers, Nador, Oujda. There are also Moroccans living in Belgium; those individuals were key in the traffic of arms seized by the police. About 10 of the 35 suspects arrested in Morocco were allegedly known in Belgium, in the organized crime circle. They come from all social classes, but most of them are from middle to upper classes: a doctor of pharmacy, a police captain, storekeepers, the head of a telecommunications company, a hotel manager, teachers. Nothing indicates that they are poor, or that they decided to take revenge on their country.

Salafi-jihadism in Lebanon

by Gary C. Gambill

fatah al-islam fighters

As Lebanon looks back on a summer of vicious fighting between the army and Fatah al-Islam that left 168 soldiers dead, armed Salafi-jihadist networks continue to operate beyond the ruins of the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp with relative impunity. Contrary to the conventional wisdom among many terrorism analysts, they have never plotted (let alone attempted) to establish an Islamic state in Lebanon. Rather, these Sunni Islamist militants have used "islands of insecurity" in the country as conduits for training and dispatching terrorists to conflict zones around the world (particularly Iraq). Under an informal quid pro quo dating back to the Syrian occupation, most have abstained from destabilizing operations within Lebanon itself in exchange for being left alone. When Fatah al-Islam violated this understanding, it was "excommunicated" by international and local Al-Qaeda affiliates eager to preserve their privileges in Lebanon. Lees verder...

God’s Country

Using militias and marketing strategies, Christianity and Islam are competing for believers by promising Nigerians prosperity in this world as well as salvation in the next. A report from the front lines

by Eliza Griswold

It was an ordinary soccer pitch: sparse tufts of grass and reddish soil surrounded by cinder-block homes. The two candidates stood on opposite sides of the field as the people of Yelwa, a town of 30,000 in central Nigeria, lined up behind them one May morning in 2002 to vote. Whoever had more supporters would lead the town’s council. And whoever led the council would control the certificates of indigeneship: the papers certifying that Yelwa was their home, and that they had a right there to land, jobs, and scholarships. Between the iron goalposts milled ethnic Jarawa, principally Muslim merchants and herders; next to them were the Tarok and Goemai, predominantly farmers and Christians. For several years, their hereditary tribal chief, a Christian, had refused certificates of indigeneship to Muslims no matter how long they’d lived in Yelwa. Without the certificates, the Muslims were second-class citizens.

Darfur and the Middle East Media: The Anatomy of Another Conspiracy

By: Steven Stalinsky *

Introduction

The Darfur region of Sudan first made headlines in February 2003 with news of massacres, rapes, mutilations, and other atrocities perpetrated by the Sudanese government and its allied armed Arab militia, the Janjaweed, against civilians in the black Arab and non-Arab south. Shortly thereafter, the Arab and Iranian media came out with reports explaining these events as the result of a conspiracy. The campaign was led by the most influential Arab and Iranian newspapers and TV channels, and was enhanced by leading Middle East religious figures, heads of state, members of academia, and other notable individuals.

According to these media reports, what was really happening in Darfur involved secret plans to create a Christian state in Sudan; a Jewish attempt to annex the African country to become part of Israel; a U.S. government effort to control Sudanese oil, uranium and other natural resources; plots by U.S. presidential candidates; and a U.S. government attempt to deflect attention from its actions in Iraq, as well as schemes by Jews, Freemasons, the United Nations, and the African Union. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion have also been cited as evidence to prove the existence of a conspiracy in Darfur.

Al Libi's Life and Death Show Interesting Connections

The recent death of Abu Laith al-Libi in Pakistan shows several interesting things about the jihadist groups operating in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, and their ties to Iraq.

The first is the prominent role that Libyans have been playing in recent times inside the al Qaeda structure and on its periphery. It is interesting to note that, in the CTC-West Point study of foreign fighters in Iraq Libyans were second only to Saudis (19 percent to 41 percent) in the number of people sent to fight.

“The obvious discrepancy between previous studies of Iraqi foreign fighters and the Sinjar Records is the percentage of Libyan fighters. No previous study has indicated that more than 4 percent of fighters were Libyan. Indeed, a June 2005 report by NBC quoted a U.S. government source indicating that Libya did not make a top ten list of origin nationalities for foreign fighters in Iraq.”

Jihad, Islamism, and the United Nations

By Jeffrey Imm

In the ongoing battle against Jihad, the most important advances are not tactical, but rather those advances that allow us to define, address, and counter the ideology behind Jihadist actions. As the 9/11 Commission report states, "Islamist terrorism is an immediate derivative of Islamism." (Notes, Part 12, Note 3, page 562) Recently, a little-noticed advance in countering Islamist ideology was achieved in the one of the least likely places of all: the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The UNHRC has a reputation of being used by its Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) nation members for an endless litany of condemnations exclusively on Israel; it has condemned Israel 15 times in less than 2 years. The UNHRC is also notorious for its refusal to condemn Hamas or any other Islamist organizations. Furthermore, the UNHRC's commissioner Louise Arbour recently welcomed the ratification of the Arab Charter on Human Rights which equates Zionism with racism; her office issued a separate statement noting the charter was "not in conformity with General Assembly Resolution 46/86, which rejects that Zionism is a form of racism."

Those who follow counterterrorism commentary over the last several months have noticed a number articles and media treatments dealing with the Muslim Brotherhood. Much of this commentary assumed familiarity with the Brotherhood and the issues raised by its presence in Western countries. Consequently, those unfamiliar with issues might feel lost, like sports fans who enter the stadium at halftime. My goal in this article is to give primer on the Muslim Brotherhood and the recent debates surrounding it. I am going to avoid the temptation to provide my own opinions on the merits of these debates. This decision does not imply that I have no opinions about the group and its worthiness for our embrace. Those opinions, however, will have to await another day.

The Muslim Brotherhood was created in Egypt in 1928, out a desire to bring about a more pure form of Islam and to gather enough popular support to force it on the Egyptian government. Today, the Brotherhood is considered the world’s most influential Islamist organization, and there are Brotherhood franchises throughout the Middle East and in many Western countries, including the United States. Its age means that the Brotherhood has spanned across four generations. Although its founder, Hassan al Banna, has been dead since 1949, some of his contemporaries are alive. Although a relatively young social movement, its 80-year existence means that the Muslim Brotherhood has had a long time to perfect is message and its mode of communication. This message has attributes that jibe with liberal sensibilities; the Brotherhood preaches that Islam enjoins man to strive for social justice, the eradication of poverty and corruption, and political freedom.

Churches burning. Muslim Riots in Kenya. Ethnic Cleansing

A mob torched a Christian church sheltering hundreds of Kenyans fleeing election violence on Tuesday, and at least 50 people were killed, police and a witness said as the president came under increasing pressure over the disputed vote.
There was a huge mob; they attacked the church," said a witness, who asked that his name not be used for fear of reprisals.
Two police officers, who were not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed that several people burned to death.

Hamas, Teddy Bears in Sudan and the Muslim Brotherhood

By Douglas Farah

There are two places where the Muslim Brotherhood exercises governmental power-Sudan and the Palestinian territories. That is, where it controls the levers of the state. It seems to me it is worth looking at these states to see how the Brotherhood would govern if given the chance, and to see the real agenda of the organization that claims to represent moderate, modernizing and tolerant interpretations of Islam.

For an excellent summary of why the Muslim Brotherhood is such an important topic, see this new paper by Hillel Fradkin of the Hudson Institute.

Minority Report Der BDB

Islamism on the Rise in Ferghana

Several months ago, I expressed skepticism at the claim that the IMU was making a comeback: given its invocation any time one of the governments that poke territory into Ferghana feel the need to crack down on their citizens, it just didn’t seem credible. That isn’t to say Islamism is not gaining market share, as recounted by a recent Alisher Saipov documentary about the increasing popularity of Hizb-ut-Tahrir on Channel Four. The BBC has picked up this meme as well:

Islamaphobia on rise, especially in Europe: U.N. envoy

Doudou Diene, U.N. special rapporteur on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance, also accused Switzerland's most popular party, the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP/UDC), of inciting hatred.

Who Is Allah?

Soeren Kern, August 23, 2007
Europeans love to mock the salience of religion in American society. But they won’t be laughing for very long. It is a well-documented fact that the de-Christianization of Europe in the name of “tolerance” is rapidly driving the spiritually shiftless continent into the arms of Islam. And now, amidst the postmodern theological confusion that defines contemporary Europe , even Catholic clergy are jumping on the Islamomania bandwagon.

The latest post-Christian theological spectacle comes to us from the Netherlands (of Ayaan Hirsi Ali fame), where the Roman Catholic Bishop of Breda, Tiny Muskens, says he wants Christians to start calling God “Allah” because he believes such a gesture would promote “rapprochement between Christianity and Islam”. Appearing on Dutch television, the 71-year-old cleric said: “Allah is a very beautiful word for God. Shouldn’t we all say that from now on we will name God Allah? … What does God care what we call him?”

Current Trends in Jihadi Networks in Europe

Lorenzo Vidino has an article in the new issue of the Jamestown Foundation's Terrorism Monitor, entitled Current Trends in Jihadi Networks in Europe. The article analyzes 5 trends: homegrown or part of a network, primary and secondary fields of jihad, the Muslim ghetto subculture, the spread to the countryside and the spread to Eastern Europe:

The terrorist related events that took place during the summer in Europe—the doctors' plot in Great Britain, the dismantling of various cells in Italy, Austria and Spain, and, finally, the September arrests in Germany and Denmark—have confirmed that Europe is a key staging ground for jihadi activities. Although large differences exist from country to country and within various subgroups in the ever-evolving underworld of jihadi networks in Europe, it is possible to identify some current trends that, in one way or another, are common to the whole continent.

Jihad, Islamism, and the Challenge of Anti-Freedom Ideologies

By Jeffrey Imm

As previously discussed, large segments of America and the West have a continuing dangerous denial on Jihad. But what of political Islamism itself?  How does it factor into a blueprint strategy in addressing our national security issues?

In the documentary "Islam versus Islamism", anti-terrorist Muslim Dr. Zuhdi Jasser states: "a majority, I believe, look at the lens of politics through an Islamist lens... if we hand them the mantle of religion that they seek to exploit for their own geopolitical issues all over the globe, then we are going to really lose this war."

Any blueprint strategy for national security must define Jihad, must address it within the national security threat, and must also define a national policy on the ideology of political Islamism... a topic where there is a deafening silence from among American political leadership.  Instead of referring to ambiguous terms such as "extremists", it is vital to refer to the specific political ideology of Islamism and examine its impact on Jihad, on national security, and on American foreign policy.

Saudi Mufti Issues Fatwa Prohibiting Saudi Youth From Engaging In Jihad Abroad

Yesterday, on October 1, 2007, Saudi Mufti Sheikh Abd Al-'Aziz bin Abdallah Aal Al-Sheikh issued a fatwa prohibiting Saudi youth from engaging in jihad abroad. In his fatwa, he stated that setting forth to wage jihad without authorization by the ruler is a serious transgression, and that young Saudis who do so are being misled by suspicious elements from both the East and the West who are exploiting them in order to accomplish their own aims, and who are actually causing serious damage to Saudi Arabia, Islam, and the Muslims.

This comes against the backdrop of a recent public debate in Saudi Arabia regarding the involvement of Saudi nationals in terrorist activities throughout the world. The debate was triggered by numerous news items indicating that Saudi nationals were participating in terrorist operations in Iraq and in the Nahr Al-Bared refugee camp in Lebanon. [1]

The following are excerpts from the mufti's fatwa, as published in the Saudi press in both Saudi Arabia and London: [2]

Escalation in the Positions of Iranian President Ahmadinejad

By: Y. Mansharof and A. Savyon

Introduction

In several recent speeches, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad outlined Iran's nuclear policy and set forth his vision regarding the interrelationship between Iran and the West.

In a speech about Iran's nuclear program, Ahmadinejad declared that Iran has become a global power, and that it would place its nuclear technology at the service of those determined to confront the U.S. and other Western countries. He announced that Iran was now successfully operating over 3,000 centrifuges, continued to downplay the impact of the U.N. Security Council sanctions on Iran, and reiterated Iran's official stance of refusal to freeze its nuclear activity. Ahmadinejad also harshly censured senior Iranian officials who had called for compromise with the West on Iran's nuclear program out of fear of a possible U.S. attack on Iran, hinting that they were traitors.

In addition, Ahmadinejad declared that the world was now at an historic turning point. The history of the West, he said, had reached its end, and the appearance of the Hidden Imam, heralding the era of Islamic Shi'ite rule, was nigh. [1] Thus, he called on the nations of the world to rise up against the hegemony of the West, headed by the U.S., and predicted the imminent collapse of Israel, which he called "Satan's standard-bearer." [2]

Following are statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on various issues, from his recent speeches:

in: Trouw, 27 november 2004, p. 33 (Letter en Geest). ENGLISH TRANSLATION: http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/005573.php

Islamist party's defeat in Morocco: a few observations

By Olivier Guitta

THe PJD (Justice and Development Party), the main Islamist party in Morocco got 46 seats during the September 7 Moroccan legislative elections. This is a surprise considering that polls were predicting a landslide victory for the PJD and its leaders were conservatively expecting to win anywhere from 70 to 80 seats.
Also very interestingly, US officials were very much betting on the PJD winning and had already started meeting regularly with their leaders.
I have written extensively about this alliance between some in the US and the Islamists.
In particular regarding the outrageous Fulbright scholarship given to the editor in Chief of the PJD's unofficial paper At Tajdid, Mustapha Khalfi.

There is much written on terrorist financing and possible sources of radical Islamist financing. We write about the Saudis (true), commodities (true) and many other parts of the puzzle. But, as the latest U.N. assessment from Afghanistan shows, one of the biggest sources of revenue now available to at least some parts of the Islamist forces is from heroin production and trafficking.

Afghanistan has set a new record on poppy production this year, as it did last year, and the year before. Who protects the poppy, the growers and the transporters? The Taliban, getting a two-for-one hit: enormous amounts of money and the change to help the West rot out from within.

A Worthwhile Reminder of the Stakes With Saudi Arabia

The official Saudi sponsorship of religious intolerance is not unknown, but every once in a while it is good to remember exactly who we are dealing with.

This is especially true in the case of Saudi-supported charities and organizations operating in the United States, who portray themselves as the face of tolerant Islam.

My most recent reminder was from the official website of Saudi Airlines, outlining what infidels can take into the country.

Tucked away in the Customs Regulations section is this:

A number of items are not allowed to be brought into the Kingdom due to religious reasons and local regulations. These include alcoholic beverages, pork and pork products, prohibited drugs and narcotics, firearms, explosives, edged weapons and pornographic materials.

International Community Must Save Arab Society from 'Pernicious and Lethal Disease' of Islamism

‘Moslims hinderen artsen bij zorg voor vrouwen’

Door een onzer redacteuren

Rotterdam, 26 juli.

Musharraf and his Labyrinth

July 18, 2007
Prepared by:

As the Pakistani government scrambles to salvage a peace accord (BosGlobe) with tribal leaders along the country’s lawless northwest frontier, unrest elsewhere in Pakistan has raised new questions about the stability of Pervez Musharraf’s military government. The ten-month-old truce, known as the Miramshah Agreement, was viewed at the beginning by some critics as a capitulation (ABC) after Pakistani troops suffered heavy casualties in trying to impose order on the region. This CFR.org Interactive Map looks at the historically ungovernable region.

The Miramshah agreement compelled Pakistan to withdraw troops from the region, a stronghold of Pakistan’s Taliban as well as the most likely location of al-Qaeda’s leadership. In theory, Musharraf and Bush administration officials argue the truce would convert the prickly tribal chieftains, whose long history of resistance to central government rule is detailed in this Backgrounder, into allies against radical Islamists.

Abbas' Presidential Guardsmen surrender to Hamas

14 June: Hamas seizes control of strategic Philadelphi enclave on Egyptian border and all Gaza’s border crossings with Egypt and Israel. At least 35 people died in the fighting Wednesday. Any international force in Gaza will be resisted in the same way as an Israeli occupation army, said a Hamas spokesman Thursday, June 14.

Senior Israeli officers described the Hamas victory to DEBKAfile as a greater misfortune for Israel than its Lebanon War setbacks. There, Hizballah was forced by Israeli military action to accept a UN ceasefire and international peacekeepers.

Hamas has no such incentive. In the case of Gaza, the winner takes all and can dictate terms. A radical Islamic enclave with a dominant Iranian-Syrian military presence has sprung up unopposed as a hostile reality on Israel’s southwestern border. It has made the Israeli-Middle East Quartet’s boycott an irrelevance.

The Doctrine of Mahdism

The Doctrine of Mahdism: In the Ideological and Political Philosophy of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Mesbah-e Yazdi
By: A. Savyon and Y. Mansharof

Background

According to Shi’ite tradition, the Twelve Imams, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Talib, were endowed with divine qualities that enabled them to lead the Shi’ite believers and to function as Allah’s emissaries on earth. However, when the Twelfth Imam Muhammad Al-Mahdi [1] disappeared in 941 CE, his connection with the Shi’ite believers was severed, and since then, the Shi’ites are commanded to await his return at any time.

In the meantime, Shi’ite senior clerics are considered to be the representatives of the Imams, and thus have the authority to handle the affairs of the Shi’ite community, mainly in the religious and judicial spheres, until the Hidden Imam returns to lead the Shi’ite community and deliver it from its suffering.

According to Shi’ite belief, during the period of the Mahdi’s absence (termed ghaibat or “occultation”), no one but God knows the hour of the Mahdi’s return, and no man can presume to foresee when this hour will come. Upon the Mahdi’s reappearance, all wrongs will be righted, divine justice will be instated, and the truth of Shi’ite Islam will be acknowledged by the entire world. (Mahdism) [2]

The Muslim Brotherhood's Big Lie

Almost since the beginning of the current debate over the nature of the Muslim Brotherhood and engagement vs. confrontation policy with the “moderate” group, one theme has been repeated by those who favor dialogue with the group. Unfortunately, the central argument is a fabrication, spun by the Muslim Brothers seeking to blunt the history of its support for violent jihad.

The campaign to portray the Brotherhood as a moderate, non-violent political force is predicated on the notion that the Brotherhood has turned away from the radical teaching of Sayyid Qutb and embraced a more moderate theology that now supposedly holds sway. Unfortunately, this line, while demonstrably untrue, has been seized on by academics and policy makers anxious for some type of engagement with the “moderate” Muslim world.

In a nutshell, the argument, put forth by Leiken and Brooke in their controversial Foreign Affairs piece, as well as James Traub in the New York Times Magazine and others is this: That the radical tract Milestones , written from prison by Brotherhood leader Sayyid Qutb calling for violent jihad against non-Muslims, particularly the West, and apostate Muslim regimes, has been repudiated, at least tacitly, by the current Brotherhood.

Cartoons Condemning the Terrorist Attacks in Algeria and Morocco

By: O. Winter

The two terrorist attacks on April 10, 2007 in Casablanca, Morocco, and the April 11, 2007 bombing in the Algerian capital were harshly condemned in the Arab world. This was clearly reflected in cartoons published in Arab newspapers, many of which dealt with various aspects of Islamist terrorism.

The cartoons presented the terrorists who perpetrated the attacks in Morocco and Algeria as bloodthirsty murderers destined for hell; the spread of terrorism in the Arab world was characterized as a worrying and threatening phenomenon; terrorism was presented as a distortion of the commandments of the Koran; and there was criticism of the clergy's acquiescence in the face of terrorist acts.

The following is a sample of the cartoons:

Morocco's mistakes in anti-terror strategy are today costly

By Olivier Guitta

In light of the recent suicide bombings in Casablanca from terrorists who did not want to get caught alive, it's interesting to take a look at some of the major deficiencies of Morocco's anti-terror strategy.
From last week's issue of The Croissant comes this story:

The United Nations pointed in 2003 to the weaknesses of the Moroccan anti-terror fight, even after the May 16 terror attacks in Casablanca:

A U.N. group composed of a dozen people and placed under the direction of a British diplomat visited Morocco in September 2003.

Why?
To verify that Morocco applied the UN Council Resolutions relating to putting an end to the support networks of international terrorism

The desperate search for an Islamic Holocaust

At the Tenth Islamic Summit Conference Putrajaya, Malaysia on October 16, 2003 the host President, Mohammed Mahathir called on the world’s Islam to seize on opportunities and develop a doctrine that can allege persecution of Islam under fictitious pretexts and create an appearance in which Muslims can claim superior moral ground particularly against Jews.

Said Mahathir:

“But today the Jews rule this world by proxy… They survived 2000 years of pogroms not by hitting back, but by thinking. They invented and successfully promoted Socialism, Communism, human rights and democracy so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong… We must use our brains also,” said Mahathir and added that “There may be windows of opportunity for us now and in the future. We must seize these opportunities.”

Islam challenges European view that religion is private

by Stephen Brown:

The growth of Islam in Europe is challenging deeply-held notions that faith is a private matter which should be banished from public life, a prominent sociologist of religion has told a gathering of European Christian leaders.

"We ignore the presence of Islam at our peril," Professor Grace Davie of the University of Exeter in Britain told leaders from Europe's main Christian traditions at a 15-18 February meeting in Wittenberg in Germany. "This is a catalyst for a much more profound change in the religious landscape of Europe."

Prof. Dr. Ursula Spuler-Stegemann Symposium/PDF

Islamexperte Hans-Peter Raddatz (Foto: Archiv)

PC is the Incubator of Islamism

By Amil Imani

Time and again we are told by the politically correct "experts" not to worry about Islam posing a threat to our way of life. We are repeatedly lectured that only a very small minority of Muslims are troublemakers who are giving the peaceful masses of Muslims a bad name. We are also informed that the terrorists, who happened to be Muslims, are the disaffected and the young. And not to worry, since as the fire of youth turns to ashes of old age the rebellious will mellow, as they always have.

With heavy assurances like this, coming from so many know-it-all authoritative figures, we can sleep soundly without the aid of sleeping pills. After all, people reason that these pundits are "experts" whose job is to know and tell it like it is. Those who voice contrary views must be a bunch of racist, alarmist hate mongers. Who is right?

Limit Muslim migration, Australia warned

That warning doesn't just go for Australia, but few are heeding it. By Barney Zwartz in the Sydney Morning Herald, with thanks to Bark:

LIFE can become untenable when the Muslim population of a non-Muslim country reaches about 10 per cent, as shown by France, a Jewish expert on Islam says.

The Australian Jewish News yesterday quoted Raphael Israeli as saying Australia should cap Muslim immigration or risk being swamped by Indonesians.

Professor Israeli told the Herald that was a misunderstanding. But he said: "When the Muslim population gets to a critical mass you have problems. That is a general rule, so if it applies everywhere it applies in Australia."

Lees verder...

Lay some skin on me

This has got to be the weirdest reason for excluding kids from school. I wish I had been so lucky. I could have just stayed at home. I mean, I've heard of a dress code, but this is just ridiculous! Our school uniform consisted of the regulation cap, blazer, grey trousers, white shirt and school tie. In Kenya, they get a little more personal...

From the BBC:

Uncircumcised pupils sent home

A Kenyan secondary school has sent home 20 boys because they were not circumcised, saying it feared they would be bullied by other students.
The new pupils at Kiriani boys' high school in Eastern Province had only been at the school for three days. The pupils were told not to return until they had completed the procedure. Click for a larger view!
"Please do the needful within two weeks and let your son report back to school with you immediately he is well," a letter to parents from the school said.
Circumcision is not obligatory for admission to secondary school, but a study released in December said it reduced the risk of contracting HIV/Aids.
Circumcision is practised in many, but not all, of Kenya's various ethnic groups.

D.C. imam glorifies Khomeini, justifies suicide bombing, preaches Islamic supremacism

It's all about the Saudi Wahhabis, you say? Other Muslim groups teach peace? Consider this: here is a Washington, D.C. Muslim community that is at odds with the Saudis, and has had several bitter confrontations with them. Details here. But the leader of the anti-Saudi group, Imam Mohammad al-‘Asi, doesn't seem to have any disagreements with them regarding what ought to be done with infidels. He excoriates them for making deals with the kuffar -- unbelievers. In "The Unknown Prophet: Forgotten Dimensions of the Seerah," he writes:

Our first priority should be to rediscover and relearn how our commanding Prophet approached the issue of power: how he set about dislodging the power of kufr [unbelief] and consolidating the power of Muslims. This should be the burning issue for every Muslim who no longer tolerates a continuation of generations and centuries that have been spent on explaining matters of personal hygiene, night prayers, and a terrifying argument about the exact minute if not the exact second when a Muslim should break his fast (in other words, does night begin with sunset or with nightfall?)! The millions of Muslims who are lost to hunger, illiteracy, malnutrition, refugeehood, and warfare every year do not allow us the ivory-tower and slow-motion ‘da'wah approach' (favored and sponsored by those arch-enemies of the Prophet's Sunnah and Seerah, the usurpers of the Haramain) [that is, the Saudis] that are responsible for our sad state of affairs from Morocco to Makkah as well as from Mongolia to Madinah. We should not be studying hair-splitting fiqhi issues in halaqat (study sessions and circles); we should be learning how to consolidate our social will-power and how to form active and status-quo-challenging units throughout our African and Asian lands to reclaim them for Islam.

Hafiz Saeed: "Jihad Has Been Ordained by Allah"

Hafiz Saeed, founder of the Pakistani terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jama’at al-Dawa  (JaD), gets a lot of media coverage overseas.  (LeT has been blamed for the abduction and beheading of Wall Street journalist Daniel Pearl.)  Alas, there's not so much coverage of LeT and JaD in the U.S. media.

As reported in the Spanish newspaper El Periodico on February 5, 2007:

"The paper alleges the militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba (The Army of the Pure) - which is banned in Pakistan - also uses Spain as a logistical and fund gathering base. Spain's anti-terror forces admit they are concerned about the infiltration of extremists from such groups as Jaish-i-Mohamed and Lashkar-e-Toiba within the Pakistani community. Catalonian police have signalled the presence in the region of several "highly mobile" radical Pakistani groups who are reported to be moving around Spain and other countries."

Muslims rebuke Pope in Open Letter

James Arlandson
One hundred Islamic scholars have signed an Open Letter to Pope Benedict XVI. It explains how he got things wrong in his lecture at the University of Regensburg. Of course Islam is nothing but peace, particularly in the Quran and the hadith, so says the Letter.

However,  American Thinker has published many articles to balance out and complete the only positive image of Islam presented by and endorsed by these scholars.

For the full picture of the Islamic rules of war as established by Muhammad, for example, go here and here.  For an article that explains more fully the forced conversions that took place while Muslim armies stood in the foreground or background, go here. This article explains why Islam today suppresses freedom of religion. Why does this happen today? It's found in the example of Muhammad and in Islamic law based squarely on the Quran and hadith.

The goal at American Thinker is to tell the entire story about this religion. Only then can dialogue really happen.

Wenn eine britische Islamistin ins Stammeln gerät...

How the Pope sees Islam

The Egyptian Jesuit priest Fr. Samir Khalil Samir, S.J. here explains the thoughtful, careful, and realistic approach that Pope Benedict XVI has adopted toward the Islamic world. "When Civilizations Meet: How Joseph Ratzinger Sees Islam," from Asia News via Chiesa, with thanks to D.:

Benedict XVI is probably one of the few figures to have profoundly understood the ambiguity in which contemporary Islam is being debated and its struggle to find a place in modern society. At the same time, he is proposing a way for Islam to work toward coexistence globally and with religions, based not on religious dialogue, but on dialogue between cultures and civilizations based on rationality and on a vision of man and human nature which comes before any ideology or religion. This choice to wager on cultural dialogue explains his decision to absorb the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue into the larger Pontifical Council for Culture.

Hirsi Ali shreds Colmes

HirsiAliHC.jpg

Balancing my criticism of Hirsi Ali today is this wonderful videoclip of a Hannity and Colmes segment with her, in which she coolly refutes Alan Colmes' unexamined but tenaciously held prejudgment that Islam is a religion of peace. Bravo. I know how reluctant they are to discuss this issue on Hannity and Colmes (notice how Hannity changes the subject rather than following up), so more power to her.

America is No Longer the #1 Satan

by Dymphna

According to a poll:

92 percent of all Egyptians agree, that Israel is hostile toward Egypt. 60 percent agreed that Denmark is hostile, followed by Britain, [and] leaving the US at a measly fourth place!

Wow! Denmark is more unfriendly than even the US — though of course not more hostile than that Zionist entity. Everybody knows those Zionists are irrationally hostile towards everyone: Egypt… and Jordan, and Lebanon, and Syria and Yemen, and so on and on and on and on...

And let us not forget the Palestinian Entity — some real hostility is being beamed there from Tel Aviv. Poor Pals are always being picked on by those mean Hebrews. Must be some kind of twisted Jewish thinking, hmm?

FOX News Documentary: "Radical Islam: Terror in Its Own Words" (6 parts)

The warning is loud and clear: radical Islam wants to kill you.

But don't take our word for it. In this FOX News investigation, E.D. Hill exposes the evil aims of radical Islam — in its own words.

Muslim clerics vowing to slaughter Americans and destroy the United States.

School children brainwashed to kill.

Mothers who rejoice at the news that their sons and daughters have blown themselves up in suicide attacks.

And an Islamic media that glorifies mass murder and cheers on terrorists.

It's an hour everybody should see here.

An Islamic Checklist

by Baron Bodissey

The Janissaries Patrol Izmir, by Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, 1828A lot of rhetoric on the topic of Islam ricochets around the blogosphere and in the media every day. Islam is a deadly danger and must be eradicated on the one hand. Muslims are victims of persecution by Islamophobes on the other hand. Assertions such as these are uncheckable and irrefutable, since they are based solely on ideology.

Suppose instead that we could make assertions that were checkable, ones that could be verified or refuted. Instead of grimacing and shaking our fists at each other, we might compile a checklist that we could mark up, based on the evidence at hand.

Here are the first ten items on my list:

Russia: Chief Mufti Threatens "Conflict'' If Russian Orthodox Culture Course Is Taught in Schools

MuftiG.jpgRavil Gainutdin, the head of Russia's Council of Muftis, lashed out today at plans by the Russian government to introduce a course on the culture of Christian Orthodoxy.

Gainutdin (pictured) claimed that plans to introduce the Orthodox culture course violate the Russian constitution's ban on having a state religion. The course, however, only introduces students to Orthodoxy as a cultural phenomenon, and does not propagate the religion.

About 80% of the Russian population espouses Christian Orthodoxy, according to the Russian census, while only about 6% of Russian citizens, or about 8 million people, claim to be Muslim. The Council of Muftis, however, says that figure is closer to 15 percent of the population, or about 20 million people.

The Muslim Brotherhood "Project"

By Patrick Poole
FrontPageMagazine.com | May 11, 2006

One might be led to think that if international law enforcement authorities and Western intelligence agencies had discovered a twenty-year old document revealing a top-secret plan developed by the oldest Islamist organization with one of the most extensive terror networks in the world to launch a program of “cultural invasion” and eventual conquest of the West that virtually mirrors the tactics used by Islamists for more than two decades, that such news would scream from headlines published on the front pages and above the fold of the New York Times, Washington Post, London Times, Le Monde, Bild, and La Repubblica.

If that’s what you might think, you would be wrong.

The Qu'ran vs. Mein Kampf

This ought to stir things up a bit.

I've gotten a lot of e-mail on the Orianna Fallaci story I posted, in which the noted author compared the Qu'ran to Hitler's `Mein Kampf'. Just for posting this, I got the usual hysterical accusations of racism and bigotry from a whole raft of self-described `liberals' who have probably never read either book! Though I would certainly bet Fallaci has, given her record. Most of the apologists for the toleration of Islamic fascism happened to mention the Crusades and the Inquisition..both of which happened centuries ago, have no modern counterpart and killed a fraction as many people as 1500 years of jihad.

Fallaci made a simple and objective factual statement, easily proved or disproved. Since I've also read both books (and believe me, it wasn't easy going) I thought I'd examine this.

Let's rock'n roll, shall we?

The Quislings of Eurabia

From the desk of Paul Belien on Tue, 2006-02-21 23:55
Last Saturday Tim Blair wrote that so far thirteen papers have been closed down after they published the Danish cartoons. At least twelve journalists face charges and seven are in prison. “Most media organisations have taken a stand by boldly running away,” says Blair. “Journalists can spend entire careers mouthing off about their commitment to free speech without ever having the chance to properly demonstrate it. I once had a theory that the lack of repression in modern democracies drove journalists to invent McCarthyesque threats, so much did they crave an opportunity to stare down those who would silence them. Their ideal imagined foes (I’m guessing): brutish religious fundamentalists opposed to progressive notions on women’s rights, homosexuality, art, and education. Problem is, those imagined foes were always named Falwell or Robertson or Nile (or John Paul II). Faced with fundamentalist religious demands from people bearing less familiar titles, however, the media froze. Missed your chance, journalists!”

Since Saturday the figures need updating. Yesterday a Saudi newspaper was banned after printing some of the cartoons. Some socialist governments in the West are no better than their islamist counterparts. Sweden has already closed two websites for publishing the cartoons, and the Finnish government closed one, and quickly apologized to Muslims worldwide for the drawings. Lees verder...
