God’s Country

Using militias and marketing strategies, Christianity and Islam are competing for believers by promising Nigerians prosperity in this world as well as salvation in the next. A report from the front lines

by Eliza Griswold

It was an ordinary soccer pitch: sparse tufts of grass and reddish soil surrounded by cinder-block homes. The two candidates stood on opposite sides of the field as the people of Yelwa, a town of 30,000 in central Nigeria, lined up behind them one May morning in 2002 to vote. Whoever had more supporters would lead the town’s council. And whoever led the council would control the certificates of indigeneship: the papers certifying that Yelwa was their home, and that they had a right there to land, jobs, and scholarships. Between the iron goalposts milled ethnic Jarawa, principally Muslim merchants and herders; next to them were the Tarok and Goemai, predominantly farmers and Christians. For several years, their hereditary tribal chief, a Christian, had refused certificates of indigeneship to Muslims no matter how long they’d lived in Yelwa. Without the certificates, the Muslims were second-class citizens.

India: The Threat in the Northeast - Part II

By Frank Hyland & Animesh Roul

This column is another in the ongoing series on the terrorist threat to India and the surrounding region by Frank Hyland and Animesh Roul.

All seven of India’s northeastern states have been plagued by militancy, with the states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur remaining the most violence-prone states of India, after Jammu & Kashmir State (J&K).

Assam: In 2007, Assam witnessed more civilian casualties - 286 (65%) out of 439 total casualties (State Police Source) due to terrorist attacks, in comparison with the more infamous J&K which garners far more of the media coverage around the world.

Qaradawi Embraces Rt. Rev. Williams Call for Start of Sharia Law in Britain

By Douglas Farah

The basic, public premise of the Muslim Brotherhood's strategy for the conquest of Europe hinges on creating Muslim enclaves that are exempt from national laws and under sharia law-then steadily expanding those areas. So it is not surprising the group headed by the Muslim Brotherhood's chief theologian would embrace the call from the Archbishop of Canterbury to actually implement such a plan.

The International Union for Muslim Scholars, led by Yousef al-Qaradawi, laments the "fierce attacks" in Britain against Archbishop Rowan William's statement that sharia law could be implemented in family matters and other issues.

If one followed that logic, then the physical abuse of women could be legal in Muslim circles, as Qaradawi has gone to considerable lengths to describe how, under sharia law, a man can hit his wife, how he should not leave marks, etc.

DEBKAfile: 10,000 Turkish troops cross into N. Iraq to hunt down PKK rebels

The land offensive early Friday, Feb. 22, was backed by with large armored forces, fighter jets and helicopters. The Turkish military said its troops would return home as soon as its goals of destroying rebel bases inside Iraqi Kurdistan were achieved. DEBKAfile’s military sources add: The question now is: Will the Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga put up resistance to the Turkish incursion? Late Thursday, the first Turkish units to enter the territory were cornered by local militiamen who threatened to shoot. In the past, Iraqi Kurdistan leaders have declared in the past that if Turkish troops set foot in their territory, there would be war between the autonomous Iraqi region and Turkey.

We will fight as we have never fought before, confronting the Israeli army with of a type of combat it has never before experienced.”

Hassan Nasrallah pledged “Mughniyeh’s blood would not go unpunished, declaring,” He was killed in a pre-emptive Israeli strike, an open war.”

The European Union And The Islamization of Europe

Here is a highlight from Fjordman's latest:

Far from being an irrelevant detail, religion is the heart and blood of any civilization. The greatest change (until now) in my country's history was when we adopted Christianity instead of the Norse religion. This changed the entire fabric of our culture. We became integrated into the mainstream of Western civilization at about the same time as we went from being a tribal society to a genuine state.

Maybe Christianity helped in creating the foundations of nation states with an individualistic culture. If so, perhaps changing the religion is beneficial for those who want to replace nation states with authoritarian transnational entities, for instance the European Union. Islamic societies are always authoritarian. Those who want to abolish the democratic system and rule as an unaccountable oligarchy thus naturally prefer Islam.

Greece battles Balkan organized crime

By Ioannis Michaletos | Blog
February 14, 2008

A phenomenon that expanded during the 90’s and early 00’s is the Balkan organized one, composed by groups of people, mainly ethnic related, that commit wide-range narcotics trafficking, slave trade and all kinds of illegal actions that require systematic action and organized method of operations.

According to recent Greek police reports, there is a pervasion of Balkan groups in Greece, mainly originating from Albania, and they are considered extremely dangerous and a peril for the stability of the society. In Athens the Albanians specialize in drugs trade and organized burglaries, with some groups that have been arrested; accounting as much as 250 burglaries in a space less than a year. Moreover Turkish groups tend to associate themselves with illegal immigrants trafficking from the East (Pakistan, Middle East), Romanians with illegal prostitution and Bulgarians with forgeries and scams.

A trend to watch is the use of technology and new techniques amongst the members of these groups such as, the use of the internet as a virtual communication world, satellite phones, and offshore companies to launder capital, counter surveillance and so on. Further more and more Balkan groups use Greek territory as a regional base and invest their illegal funds in front companies such as bars, clubs, strip shows and the real estate.

U.S. Rewarding Palestinian Terrorism

Unwavering U.S. determination to fund, train, and arm more than 50,000 Palestinian “soldiers” raises serious doubts about the repeated promises President George W. Bush has made to secure Israel’s safety and bring peace to the Middle East.

If the Bush administration gets its way, $4.2 billion to $7 billion in American taxpayer dollars over the next five years may fund training and purchase arms for tens of thousands of seasoned Palestinian terrorists. Many are veteran murderers, released from Israeli prisons in “confidence building” measures repeatedly demanded by the U.S.

It’s as if the U.S. proposed sending money, arms, and military instructors to help Sudanese strongman, Omar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir, assist Darfur refugees — against whom he openly pursues genocide.

Darfur and the Middle East Media: The Anatomy of Another Conspiracy

By: Steven Stalinsky *

The Darfur region of Sudan first made headlines in February 2003 with news of massacres, rapes, mutilations, and other atrocities perpetrated by the Sudanese government and its allied armed Arab militia, the Janjaweed, against civilians in the black Arab and non-Arab south. Shortly thereafter, the Arab and Iranian media came out with reports explaining these events as the result of a conspiracy. The campaign was led by the most influential Arab and Iranian newspapers and TV channels, and was enhanced by leading Middle East religious figures, heads of state, members of academia, and other notable individuals.

According to these media reports, what was really happening in Darfur involved secret plans to create a Christian state in Sudan; a Jewish attempt to annex the African country to become part of Israel; a U.S. government effort to control Sudanese oil, uranium and other natural resources; plots by U.S. presidential candidates; and a U.S. government attempt to deflect attention from its actions in Iraq, as well as schemes by Jews, Freemasons, the United Nations, and the African Union. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion have also been cited as evidence to prove the existence of a conspiracy in Darfur.

After Kosovo Secedes

February 12, 2008

After several false starts, Serbia’s restive province of Kosovo seems set to declare independence in the very near future (CNN). A declaration would mark the end of an era for Kosovo, which erupted in ethnic violence in the late 1990s, prompted a U.S.-led intervention in 1999, and has been a protectorate of the United Nations ever since. It would also close a chapter for the Balkan region, in all likelihood marking the final splintering of what had been the confederation of Yugoslavia.

Yet Kosovo’s secession seems likely to open as many questions as it resolves. First is the matter of Kosovo’s own stability. Kosovo’s ethnic Serb minority, numbering at least 100,000, remain scattered in pockets throughout the province. Some observers fear these communities could face violence from Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority. Serbia warns that an exodus of Kosovo’s Serbs northwards into Serbia might prompt additional ethnic fighting (Guardian). Further complicating these scenarios is likely turnover in international oversight of the province. A looming Russian veto threat in the UN Security Council means the United Nations is unlikely to officially recognize Kosovo as independent and would have to withdraw its mission there. The European Union has readied a replacement mission (Reuters), but questions linger over how smoothly a transfer would take place. For starters, Russia recently questioned the legality (RIA Novosti) of EU or NATO forces operating in an independent Kosovo without explicit authority from the UN Security Council.

Israel’s army chief orders IDF land, sea and air forces to prepare to defend the country’s northern borders and interests

Defense minister Ehud Barak said the entire national defense system is fully prepared and alert as heavy Israeli reinforcements, including homeland defense units, were rushed Thursday to northern Israel.

Lt. Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi gave these orders Thursday, Feb. 14, 24 hours after a bomb killed Hizballah’s military commander Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that he took these unprecedented steps following a stream of incoming intelligence updates reporting that Iran, Syria and Hizballah had decided not to let Mughniyeh’s death pass without an immediate response.

Israeli forces have been placed on the highest level of preparedness against possible Syrian or Hizballah cross-border strikes. Rocket attacks by Hizballah against Israeli civilians are also taken into account, as well as possible Syrian air force incursions into Israel air space.

Fjordman: The European Union and the Islamization of Europe

Hugh Fitzgerald of Jihad Watch recently suggested a number of things Europeans can do to halt Islamization. The proposals were good, but I think we should focus on the most important obstacle: the European Union. I've suggested in the past that the EU is the principal motor behind the Islamization of Europe, and that the entire organization needs to be dismantled as soon as possible, otherwise nothing substantial can ever be done about the Muslim invasion. At the Gates of Vienna blog, I am writing a text called "Ten Reasons to Get Rid of the European Union," which can be translated into other languages and be republished when it is completed. As Bat Ye'or demonstrates in her book Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis, senior EU leaders have actively been working for years to merge Europe with the Arab world. They are now feeling confident enough to say this openly. The British Foreign Minister David Miliband in November 2007 stated that the European Union should work towards including Middle Eastern and North African countries, as this would "extend stability." He also said that the EU must "keep our promises to Turkey" regarding EU membership. Lees verder...

UK: 17,000 Women are Victims of "Honor" Violence Every Year....

UK: 17,000 Women are Victims of "Honor" Violence Every Year....

When England is the capital of Eurabia, this won't even be illegal.  My advice to Muslims there, wait it out....

Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to "honour" related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs.

And official figures on forced marriages are the tip of the iceberg, says the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

It warns that the number of girls falling victim to forced marriages, kidnappings, sexual assaults, beatings and even murder by relatives intent on upholding the "honour" of their family is up to 35 times higher than official figures suggest.

Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to "honour" related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs.

Commander Steve Allen, head of ACPO's honour-based violence unit, says the true toll of people falling victim to brutal ancient customs is "massively unreported" and far worse than is traditionally accepted.

"We work on a figure which suggests it is about 500 cases shared between us and the Forced Marriage Unit per year," he said: "If the generally accepted statistic is that a victim will suffer 35 experiences of domestic violence before they report, then I suspect if you multiplied our reporting by 35 times you may be somewhere near where people's experience is at." His disturbing assessment, made to a committee of MPs last week, comes amid a series of gruesome murders and attacks on British women at the hands of their relatives.

Deputy President Of Higher Education Board [YOK] Resigns From His Position

Professor Isa Esme, deputy president of the Higher Education Board (YOK), resigned yesterday from his post, which he has held since 2005. Esme had been on leave since Dec. 28 when he was told by [then] newly appointed YOK President Yusuf Ziya Ozcan, not to exercise his authority as deputy president of the Council.

In his announcement Esme said, “During the YOK general council meeting [yesterday] I realized that the majority of the members of the council - the composition of which changed as a result of the this week's appointments by President Abdullah Gul - would not give the necessary support for me to fulfill my duties, and that Ozcan is likely to work with new deputy presidents in a more coherent way”. Professor Esme said that he had resigned his post as deputy president but would try to make his contributions as a council member.

Another YOK deputy president, Professor Aybar Ertepinar had resigned from his post in December, when President Gul appointed Ozcan as YOK president.

U.S. AID Fuels Palestinian Terror

The Bush Administration's search for partners to promote “peace” and “democracy” within the Palestinian Authority (PA) resembles Lord Charles Bowen’s “blind man in a dark room looking for a black hat -- which isn’t there.”

For the first time, the Bush Administration plans to give $150 million in cash directly to the Palestinian Authority (PA) Treasury, as part of a $496.5 million “aid” package, including $410 million for development programs. This added to the $86.5 million for CIA “security training,” which Congress authorized in April 2007.

The CIA has apparently assumed the Palestinian terrorist-training role previously held by the former Soviet Union. Since 1994, the CIA armed and trained thousands of Palestinian “security forces,” who subsequently joined every Palestinian terrorist organization.

The return of the Caliphate

By M. Bozinovich
February 8, 2008

When Sultan Mehmet V dislodged in Üsküp, the dusty capital of the Islamic Kossova province known today as Skopje, "5000 Albanians had come to the town from villages up to twenty kilometers away" to greet and cheer the Islamic Claliph, the last out of the Ottoman dynastic succession in the Islamic Caliphate to have officially declared Jihad against allied Christian powers of the West in WWI.

Sultans of the Islamic Caliphate were referred to as merciful and benevolent because those who professed fealty to the Caliphate, like the Muslim Albanians, were richly rewarded with plunders of booty from local Christians, the raya, who held no earthly fealty but only a lachrymal dream of liberty.

...and many more fealty Muslim Albanians came to cheer the Caliph Sultan Mehmet V when he dislodged in Pristina, today's capital of Kosovo, to pray at the tomb of the Muslim Sultan Murad I whose army in 1389 killed Christian Serb defenders, "numerous as locusts" as Islamic chroniclers record, and through capture of Kosovo occupied the Balkans.

Save Lebanon from Syria and Iran

The The outpouring of emotion and rage following the brutal assassination of towering Lebanese figure Rafik Hariri on Feb. 14, 2005, triggered the hopeful Lebanese Cedar Revolution. The anti-Syrian movement behind it, the March 14 forces, succeeded in forcing tens of thousands of Syrian troops to leave Lebanon.

But that did not mean Syria was totally out of Lebanon. In fact, right after the Syrian withdrawal, the very well informed Kuwaiti newspaper Al Seyassah reported that, according to sources close to the Lebanese Ministry of Interior, tens of thousands of Syrians were naturalized, and among them were 5,000 Syrian intelligence personnel. And as of today, Syria is still very much in charge of Lebanon. What is the international community doing about this?

Not much, to say the least.

Winds of War: The Tripartite Threat of Radical Islam to Europe

There’s a wonderful abstract from the Israel Hasbara Committee that states the threat that Europe and this country faces from the Islamist strategy to advance their worldwide agenda that goes beyond just militant jihad - terrorism.

The threat can be visualized as a pyramid. At the tip are the Jihadists. They openly challenge the societies in which they live and are willing to shed blood. They began to establish a presence in Europe in the mid 1980s. Originating in various Middle Eastern and North African countries, they spread throughout the European continent. By the second half of the 1990s these groups and networks began to gravitate toward the orbit of al-Qaida, embracing its message of global jihad. Groups from various countries decided to join forces against their traditional enemies in the Muslim world and against the West. A key role in exchange of ideas among these groups was played by some of Europe ’s most radical mosques.

Al Libi's Life and Death Show Interesting Connections

The recent death of Abu Laith al-Libi in Pakistan shows several interesting things about the jihadist groups operating in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, and their ties to Iraq.

The first is the prominent role that Libyans have been playing in recent times inside the al Qaeda structure and on its periphery. It is interesting to note that, in the CTC-West Point study of foreign fighters in Iraq Libyans were second only to Saudis (19 percent to 41 percent) in the number of people sent to fight.

“The obvious discrepancy between previous studies of Iraqi foreign fighters and the Sinjar Records is the percentage of Libyan fighters. No previous study has indicated that more than 4 percent of fighters were Libyan. Indeed, a June 2005 report by NBC quoted a U.S. government source indicating that Libya did not make a top ten list of origin nationalities for foreign fighters in Iraq.”

Multiple wives will mean multiple benefits

By Jonathan Wynne-Jones

Husbands with multiple wives have been given the go-ahead to claim extra welfare benefits following a year-long Government review, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

  • Have your say: Should multiple wives get recognition from the state?

Even though bigamy is a crime in Britain, the decision by ministers means that polygamous marriages can now be recognised formally by the state, so long as the weddings took place in countries where the arrangement is legal.

The outcome will chiefly benefit Muslim men with more than one wife, as is permitted under Islamic law. Ministers estimate that up to a thousand polygamous partnerships exist in Britain, although they admit there is no exact record.

Jihad, Islamism, and the United Nations

    By Jeffrey Imm

In the ongoing battle against Jihad, the most important advances are not tactical, but rather those advances that allow us to define, address, and counter the ideology behind Jihadist actions. As the 9/11 Commission report states, "Islamist terrorism is an immediate derivative of Islamism." (Notes, Part 12, Note 3, page 562) Recently, a little-noticed advance in countering Islamist ideology was achieved in the one of the least likely places of all: the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The UNHRC has a reputation of being used by its Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) nation members for an endless litany of condemnations exclusively on Israel; it has condemned Israel 15 times in less than 2 years. The UNHRC is also notorious for its refusal to condemn Hamas or any other Islamist organizations. Furthermore, the UNHRC's commissioner Louise Arbour recently welcomed the ratification of the Arab Charter on Human Rights which equates Zionism with racism; her office issued a separate statement noting the charter was "not in conformity with General Assembly Resolution 46/86, which rejects that Zionism is a form of racism."

Chad's Future Taliban enters capital while the West is asleep

    By Walid Phares

As Americans are debating who among their candidates for the primaries can best confront the Jihadists or at least preempt their offensives worldwide, future Jihadi forces have in one day invaded an African country (under European protection), a key location for the Darfur forthcoming Peace missions. In less than 12 hours the so-called armed opposition of Chad, crossed the entire country from its Eastern frontiers with Islamist-ruled Sudan to the capital N'Djamena across from Northern Nigeria. The latest reports mention fierce battles around the Presidential Palace and back and forth inside the city. But at this stage the geo-political consequences are crucial for the next stages locally, regionally and internationally. The bottom line is that in one day, what could become the future Taliban of Chad have scored a strategic victory not only against the Government of the country (which was supposed to back up the UN plans to save Darfur in Sudan) but also against the efforts by the African Union and European Union to contain the Sudanese regime and stop the Genocide. Today's offensive, regardless of the next developments, has already changed the geopolitics of Africa. Outmaneuvering the West and Africans, those regimes and forces standing behind the "opposition" have shown that they are restless in their campaign against human rights and self determination on the continent. But even more importantly the events of today shows how unprepared are Europeans and Americans in front of Jihadi regimes which seem weak on the surface but highly able to surprise and crumble Western efforts of containment.

Another Colombian Drug Lord Found (Dead) in Venezuela

One of Colombia’s main drug lords, who had a $5 million U.S. bounty on his head, has been found dead in Venezuela, where he had been living for some time.

Wilber Varela, AKA “Soap,” was a leader of the massively violent and powerful Northern Valley cartel, a former hitman, who is now suspected of being killed by his own men.

Such is the life in one of the most violent of the cartels. Previous leaders (Ivan Urdinola, Diego Montoya etc.) earned their infamy by chopping up their victims with chainsaws and dumping the bodies in the Cauca River, earning the body of water the title of “River of Death.” This was terrorism in the name of greed rather than religion.

But what is more interesting is that Varela seems to have been living in the Venezuelan city of Merida. This is significant because Chávez government does not cooperate with international drug interdiction efforts and had made not efforts to apprehend him.
