The Muslim Brotherhood for Beginners

By Jeffrey Breinholt

Those who follow counterterrorism commentary over the last several months have noticed a number articles and media treatments dealing with the Muslim Brotherhood. Much of this commentary assumed familiarity with the Brotherhood and the issues raised by its presence in Western countries. Consequently, those unfamiliar with issues might feel lost, like sports fans who enter the stadium at halftime. My goal in this article is to give primer on the Muslim Brotherhood and the recent debates surrounding it. I am going to avoid the temptation to provide my own opinions on the merits of these debates. This decision does not imply that I have no opinions about the group and its worthiness for our embrace. Those opinions, however, will have to await another day.

The Muslim Brotherhood was created in Egypt in 1928, out a desire to bring about a more pure form of Islam and to gather enough popular support to force it on the Egyptian government. Today, the Brotherhood is considered the world’s most influential Islamist organization, and there are Brotherhood franchises throughout the Middle East and in many Western countries, including the United States. Its age means that the Brotherhood has spanned across four generations. Although its founder, Hassan al Banna, has been dead since 1949, some of his contemporaries are alive. Although a relatively young social movement, its 80-year existence means that the Muslim Brotherhood has had a long time to perfect is message and its mode of communication. This message has attributes that jibe with liberal sensibilities; the Brotherhood preaches that Islam enjoins man to strive for social justice, the eradication of poverty and corruption, and political freedom.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb's dilemma

By OLIVIER GUITTA (Middle East Times)
The Algerian terror group GSPC (Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat) is the main component of Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

In the past few weeks AQIM has scored many successes: pulling off a double suicide attack on Dec. 11 in Algiers that killed officially 31 (but maybe up to 76), killing in two separate attacks four French tourists and three soldiers in Mauritania.

The Rate of Immigration into the EU is Increasing

by Baron Bodissey

Below is a very sobering story from today’s ANSAmed about the projected rate of immigration into Europe from “the South” over the next decade.

There are several things to bear in mind when reading this:

1.   This forecast is based on information from EuroMed, i.e. the official arm of the European Commission charged with establishing what has become known as Eurabia. One can thus assume that the predictions have been massaged to the best of EuroMed’s abilities, and that the real situation must be even worse.
2.   The more educated immigrants are going overseas, to the USA, Australia, etc. The poor, ignorant, and less employable “southerners” are moving to Europe.

Majority Europeans fed up with multi-culturalism; consider Islam dangerous

January 27th 2008

Europe finally waking up to the Islamic invasion

AN “overwhelming majority” of Europeans believe immigration from Islamic countries is a threat to their traditional way of life, a survey revealed last night.

The poll, carried out across 21 countries, found “widespread anti-immigration sentiment”, but warned Europe’s Muslim population will treble in the next 17 years.

It reported “a severe deficit of trust is found between the Western and Muslim communities”, with most people wanting less interaction with the Muslim world.

The Eurabia Code
by Fjordman

DolchStossI decided to write this essay after a comment from a journalist, not a Leftist by my country’s standards, who dismissed Eurabia as merely a conspiracy theory, one on a par with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. I do not disagree with the fact that conspiracy theories exist, nor that they can be dangerous. After all, the Protocols and the Dolchstosslegende, or “stab in the back myth” — the idea that Germany didn’t lose WW1 but was betrayed by Socialists, intellectuals and Jews — helped pave the way for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis before WW2.

The Muslims of Europe Charter

by Baron Bodissey

A couple of weeks ago several news stories appeared about a new initiative called “The Muslims of Europe Charter”. According to the EU Observer, about 400 European Muslim organizations were represented by the charter:

“The charter is a message to government and the rest of society, but also directed at Muslims within Europe,” said Ibrahim Elzayat, a spokesperson for the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe (FIOE), the co-ordinator of the process that resulted in the historic document.
At about the same time, knowing nothing about any charter, I reported on FIOE and its website. The organization seemed to have appeared out of nowhere in order to present some of the smooth well-funded Islamic propaganda that we’ve all become familiar with in recent years. I’m not including a link to the FIOE site, because since then it has either been taken down, or has been hacked (the placeholder page for the URL now offers “Jewish porn”, among other choices).

EU torn over its reach to Serbia

January 27, 2008 8:03 AM

BRUSSELS, Belgium-European Union foreign ministers on Monday will seek to overcome differences over whether to offer Serbia a path to EU membership despite the Balkan nation's failure to track down suspected war criminals.

Most EU nations want to conclude the deal quickly to mitigate mounting anti-Western feeling in Serbia as Europe and the United States appear likely to recognize an expected declaration of independence by its breakaway Kosovo province.

However the Netherlands and Belgium are opposed, saying the Serbs have shown insufficient cooperation with the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague, which is still searching for Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, who led the Serb faction during Bosnia's civil war in the early 1990s.

Turkey Again Bans YouTube

Turkey last week banned access to the YouTube website because it offered a video allegedly "insulting Mustafa Kemal Atatürk – Turkey's founder – and the founders of the state."

The last time Turkey imposed a YouTube ban it was lifted two days later, after YouTube removed the videos in question.

On January 18, Ankara's 12th Court of Peace decided to ban access to the site because of a clip created and posted by a user called "Turkomaymun" [i.e.Turkishmonkey].

PM Erdogan: “We Got The Immorality From The West”

In his speech to Turkish graduate students going to study abroad, Erdogan made some controversial remarks that met with strong reactions in Turkey’s mainstream media. Erdogan said, “The poet who penned Turkish national anthem [the Islamist Mehmet Akif Ersoy] said that we should compete with art and science of the West; but unfortunately we adopted the West’s immoralities that are contrary to our values”.

He added that Turkey would continue sending students abroad for graduate studies for them to [learn and] compete in order to reach beyond the art and science of the West and asked the students to come back after their studies and work in Turkey.

The PM’s remarks were questioned by the media that asked what he meant by “the West’s immoralities”, whether or not he was talking about Western women not being covered, and how Turkey could become a EU member when the PM thought the West was “immoral”.

DEBKAfile: Much of southern Israel closed to civilian traffic, US and Israeli bases on high alert for Hamas incursions from Sinai

Most highways of the southern Negev - which adjoins the unfenced 220-km Egyptian Sinai frontier - were ordered shut to civilian traffic early Saturday, Jan. 26, until further notice. This is Israel’s most extensive terror alert ever, DEBKAfile’s military sources report. The big Israeli and American air and military bases in the region are on high terror alert and officers’ families are being removed to central Israel, following intelligence warnings that Hamas, Jihad Islami and al Qaeda are preparing to launch suicide operations across the porous Egyptian border from N. Sinai.

Israeli military forces have spread out across the southern region, checkpoints set up on the highways, lookout positions posted, and helicopters and drones are on constant surveillance.

DEBKAfile’s sources in the south report that Eilat, Israel’s southernmost town and Red Sea port, is not entirely cut off; the eastern Highway 90 is open to traffic although Highway 10 which follows the Egyptian Sinai frontier is closed.

Will Georgia-Kosovo be the Moscow-Washington deal?

January 24th, 2008

Serbia is to seal the gas deal with Russia and, coincidentally or not, Russia is dropping its insistence that Kosovo would make a precedent on former Soviet Georgia ruled by a Washington backed president.

Are we to expect a reciprocation from Washington?

For some time, foreign policy craftsmen at the Council on Foreign Relations, besides starting the Putin-demonization campaign, have threatened Kosovo independence as a pawn against Russia.

Robert D. Blackwill with the Council on Foreign Relations has urged the Bush administration back in December to show flexibility with such issues as Kosovo by which he means that it is time for US to cash in its chips.

Was Washington waiting on Moscow to make this first offer?

Some hints on this may come out in statements after NATO, EU finishes its “coordinated” meeting with Kosovo Albanian separatists held now.

DEBKAfile Exclusive: Hamas’ seizure of Northern Sinai from Egypt sends Washington, Jerusalem and Cairo into tense consultations

Senior military sources told DEBKAfile that the strategic feat achieved by Hamas Tuesday night, in capturing a section of Sinai from Egyptian forces, is irreversible. Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert held tense talks on the crisis Wednesday night, Jan. 23.

By demolishing the 10-km concrete barrier dividing the Gaza Strip from Egyptian Sinai, Hamas, backed by 200,000 Palestinians who surged across Wednesday, has acquired a new stronghold outside Israel’s military reach. US and Israeli intelligence sources report that Hamas laid the ground for its coup and timed it deliberately for the opening Wednesday of the Palestinian National Congress in Damascus. This event was organized by Tehran and Damascus to counter the US-promoted Annapolis conference and discredit Mahmoud Abbas’ diplomatic track with Israel under the US aegis.

DEBKAfile: In a polemical assault on Israel as a Jewish state, Saudi prince offers peace plan for “Arab Jews”

In an interview with Reuters, PrincePrince TurkiTurki al-Faisal, former Saudi ambassador to the US and UK, again touted the 2002 Saudi peace initiative requiring full Israeli withdrawal from “occupied Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese land” in return for “full normalization of relations.” But Turki added a refinement: If Israel signed a comprehensive peace, “one can imagine the integration of Israel into the Arab geographical entity.” He went on to say: "We will start thinking of Israelis as Arab Jews rather than simply as Israelis."

DEBKAfile’s political sources note that this influential Saudi, a former intelligence chief and brother of foreign minister Saudi al Faisal, is keeping up the relentless Arab assault on the Zionist ideal of a sovereign Jewish state in its ancestral homeland.

Furthering his vision of an Arabized Israel, the Saudi prince holds out the promise of: "Exchange visits by people of both Israel and the rest of the Arab countries would take place."

The interview took place at a conference in Kronberg on the Middle East and Europe staged by Germany's Bertelsmann Foundation think-tank.

Kosovo Muslim Albanian Imam asks Saudis for support

January 22, 2008

Muslim Albanian separatist paper in Kosovo, Zeri, says that the chief Muslim Albanian Imam Ternava, has been invited by Prince Feysal of Saudi Arabia where they will discuss independence recognition that Islamic states hope for.

In a meeting with the senior Arab officials, it is expected that Imam Ternava will ask for Saudi support and recognition of Kosovo’s independence.

Ternava will also meet with the Saudi Minister for Religion Issues, where the Kosovo Muslims will discuss cooperation on Ministry of Religion issues and Kosovo.

Last week, another Islamic Emirate of Kuwait has pledge support for independence ok Kosovo.

Kosovo is a Serbia province held siege by extremist Muslim ALbanians who threaten violence if the world community does not give them independence. Since 1999, over two thirds of Christians in the province have been ethnically cleansed and hundreds of churches destroyed.

The Real Issue on the Latin American Landscape

My colleague Andrew Cochran’s post on the threat (or not) to the Panama Canal seems to me to miss the larger picture of the threat from Latin America.

That threat is contained in the recent statements by Adm. James Stavridis, head of the US Southern Command at a recent CSIS conference.

Stavridis warned that “the connectivity between narcoterrorism and Islamic radical terrorism could be disastrous in this region. What I worry about in this region with outside actors coming into it is the potential for those streams to cross, if you will, for the fuel of narcoterrorism to become engaged in Islamic radicalism here in the Americas.”

That is it in a nutshell. It is the Iran-Venezuela-Nicaragua nexus, built on a foundation of already-existing Hezbollah and Hamas operatives who have been economically active in the region for decades.

Courts Take Action To Protect Turkey's Secular Democracy: Second Warning On Turban Comes From Another High Court

The statement of the highest administrative court said that if the current changes that are being contemplated [by the government] are not in line with the core and unchangeable principles of the Constitution, such behavior will jeopardize all the gains of the Republic. It also expressed concern that the said initiatives [to lift turban ban] will end up being not limited only to some educational institutions, but will harm the national peace and harmony. The statement emphasized the four characteristics of Turkish Republic as “secular, democratic, social, and governed by rule of law” and said that these are the core constitutional principles of Turkey that cannot be altered and no suggestion can be made for them to be altered.

The Swiss Kadi case ends up in a judicial fiasco

Having been involved in this investigation as an expert for the prosecution, I will not comment on the specific allegations and evidence gathered in the course of the investigation, and limit my comments to the context of this case.

From what I witnessed during this six-year long investigation opened on October 15, 2001, this decision mainly reflects the failure of the Swiss prosecution and judicial system, unprepared and unequipped to handle such a complex case, unable to obtain the cooperation of foreign countries, and therefore unable to avoid the many legal hurdles and challenges provided by Kadi’s lawyers during the course of the procedure.

Europe faces up to Iranian threat

United States President George W Bush has just ended a seven-nation tour of the Middle East trying to gather support on the Iranian threat. He does not need to fly to Europe to convince some European nations of the gravity of the threat. In fact, the December US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report did not change a thing in Europe's assessment of the Iranian danger, even though it said Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program years ago.

A not well-known fact shows Europe's determination vis-a-vis Iran: the European Union has gone further than the two United Nations

Security Council resolutions against Iran actually require. It has sanctioned additional entities and banned some additional transactions.

From Afghanistan to Kosovo: Lessons in Shortsightedness

ANALYSIS By Bojan Ratkovic January 15, 2008

In response to the 1979 Soviet invasion of Aghanistan, Washington initiated a coalition with Islamic states in order to counter communist expansion into Central Asia. The Islamic states that took part in the coalition (including Saudi Arabia overtly and Iran covertly) saw to it that funding Islamic proxy fighters, the Mujahedeen, became the blueprint for supporting Islamic expansion elsewhere. The blueprint was successfully exported into the Balkans where both Saudi Arabia and Iran funded Muslim violence in Bosnia and later in Kosovo, mainly against the Christian Serbs. As in Afghanistan, the Islamists enjoyed Washington’s support in falsely portraying their Jihad as a fight for freedom from Slavic “aggressors”. But what are the consequences of Washington’s strategy?

Arming the Mujahedeen

In response to what the Western world widely considered an act of Soviet aggression in Afghanistan, the United States (vis-à-vis the CIA and other agencies) along with the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and China began heavily arming Islamic guerillas fighting Afghanistan’s government forces and the Soviet military. (Operation Cyclone) The Americans found adequate allies in religious fundamentalists fighting to rid Afghanistan of the “godless Russians”, and establish an extremist Islamic state along the way. As Dr. Farrukh Saleem notes, “between 1980 and 1989, CIA poured in some $6 billion (other estimates go as high as $20 billion) in arms, ammunition, recruiting, establishing an extensive madrassa network, training, feeding and arming of recruits.” The local Afghan “holy warriors” (Mujahedeen) were joined by some 35,000-50,000 Muslim jihadists from 43 other nations, prominent among them a young Saudi extremist named Osama bin Laden.

Anniversary of a lie that spurred bombing of Serbia

January 15, 2008

Today marks the ninth anniversary since the 1999 Chief of an OSCE Mission to Kosovo, William Walker accused Serbs of massacring 45 civilians in a Kosovo village of Racak, an event used by the Clinton administration as a pretext to initiate a bombing campaign against Serbia claiming that Serbian forces were out to genocide 2 million Kosovo Albanians.

Nine years into this conflict, over two thirds of Serbs have been expelled or killed by the Muslim Albanians of Kosovo and the remaining Serbs are forced into ghettos reminiscent of Jews in the Nazi Germany.

However, the then head of the international monitors in Kosovo, William Walker, said that he had "absolutely no doubt" that Serb troops were killers even though the forensic experts, reported by the Berlin Zeitung, found that there is no proof that unarmed civilians were murdered in Racak.

The Collapse of the Saudi Sunni Bloc against Iran's Aspirations for Regional Hegemony in the Gulf

By: Y. Yehoshua, I. Rapoport, Y. Mansharof, A. Savyon and Y. Carmon*

For the past two years, the Gulf states have been part of a Sunni bloc established by Saudi Arabia to counter Iran's aspirations for regional hegemony. During this period, Saudi Arabia made efforts to distance Iran from "Arab affairs," while the Gulf states were already in political conflict with Iran over the issue of the three islands (Greater and Lesser Tunb, and Abu Moussa) that Iran had forcefully seized from the UAE in 1971, and following recent statements by senior Iranian leaders threatening Bahrain's sovereignty. [1] Some in Saudi Arabia even called on the Gulf states to form a military alliance against Iran. [2] This Gulf policy vis-à-vis Iran was in line with U.S. efforts to isolate it in both the regional and the international arenas.

Muslim Britain is becoming one big no-go area

The Times also has something to say from another former member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Shiraz Maher. How many renegades from Hizb ut Tahrir are there?
Perhaps it had to be someone like Michael Nazir-Ali, the first Asian bishop in the Church of England, who would break with convention and finally point out the elephant in the room.
His comments last week about the growing stranglehold of Muslim extremists in some communities revived debate about the future of multiculturalism and provoked a flurry of condemnation. Members of all three political parties immediately clamoured to dismiss him. “I don’t recognise the description that he’s talked about – no-go areas and people feeling intimidated,” said Hazel Blears, the communities secretary.
A quick call to her Labour colleague John Reid, the former home secretary, would almost certainly have helped her to identify at least one of those places. Just over a year ago Reid was heckled by the Muslim extremist Abu Izzadeen in Leytonstone, east London, during a speech on extremism, appropriately. “How dare you come to a Muslim area,” Izzadeen screamed.

Great Albania" as base for attack on Europe

By Ioannis Michaletos | Blog
January 6, 2008

The ongoing Kosovo status culminations are inescapably related to the quest of “Great Albania” by Albanian nationalists, Islamic organizations and ambiguous international interests linked in various occasions with transnational criminal entities. The real cause of their aim is the influence across the Balkans so as to format a convenient base for their final target which is Europe.

As it can be understood, the Albanian nationalists are mainly interested in creating a larger state by encompassing all Albanian minorities in the neighboring states. Inevitably that means conflicts across the Balkans for years to come, and it is puzzling how the international community is not interested enough to control the aims of the Albanians that first and foremost put in danger the European prospects of the whole of the region.

Just a few days ago, Nait Hasani member of PDK Presidency called towards the goal of a greater Albania. “First there should be supervised independence as proposed by Ahtisaari. But it is known that Kosovo and Albania citizens are one nation who want to live in one state," Hasani is quoted as having told a Polish paper.  It is interesting to have a glance of the bio of this individual that proposes a blunt border change.

Turkey Must Protect Priests

An artist, former politician and columnist Zulfu Livaneli of the mainstream daily Vatan wrote that from the killing of the Italian Priest Andrea Santoro in Trabzon to the Malatya massacre of three missionaries, and the stabbing of another priest in Ýzmir last month, the perpetrators have said that they wanted to be famous by killing a priest.

Livaneli wrote that many youngsters have these cheap heroic dreams and despite the fact that there is no criminal organization or secret group behind these incidents a dangerous environment exists. The columnist says that youth are brainwashed through media publications and are taught that killing priests is an act of 'nationalism', therefore 'dignified'.

Livaneli asks, “Have you ever heard that an imam was killed or that a German or Italian teenager who wanted to be famous stabbed a Muslim cleric?” and adds that the state has the obligation to protect non-Muslim clerics by placing them under police protection, as new education programs are launched to cleanse the young brains and to teach them what is right and wrong. Livaneli says that the media has a contribution to make to the process by proper and responsible broadcasts and publications.

Churches burning. Muslim Riots in Kenya. Ethnic Cleansing

A mob torched a Christian church sheltering hundreds of Kenyans fleeing election violence on Tuesday, and at least 50 people were killed, police and a witness said as the president came under increasing pressure over the disputed vote.
There was a huge mob; they attacked the church," said a witness, who asked that his name not be used for fear of reprisals.
Two police officers, who were not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed that several people burned to death.

Flaig schreibt kein Pamphlet. Sein Aufsatz ist ein Plädoyer für die Demokratie, jene mühsam errungene Regierungsform, die dem Menschen die Möglichkeit gibt, sein Geschick selbst in die Hand zu nehmen.

New Year Day attacks on Kosovo Serb homes

January 2, 2008

Eight houses owned by Serbs have been attacked in Kosovo on the first day in the New Year, reports FoNet news agency.

Kosovo and Metohija Coordinating Center says that the attacks have been synchronized and focused on a Serbian enclave of Kosovska Mitrovica in northern Kosovo.

One Serb house was set on fire and seven others were stoned. A home owned by Radovan Lazic was set ablaze just after the arrival of the New Year. The house is no longer usable.

Kosovo Serbs are habitually targeted by the Albanian Muslim extremists across the Kosovo province. Later in the New Year day, a Serb bank was blown up in a bombing attack in Kosovo.

Kosovo is a Serbian province, administered by UN since 1999, where Muslim Albanians are a majority by ethnically and religiously cleansing the Christians out of a province in order to make an ethnically and religiously pure Muslim Albanian state. Separatist Muslims have warned repeatedly that they will turn to violence if they do not get independence.

Arming, Military Training, and the Weapons Trade in Lebanon

By: H. Varulkar*

The current political crisis in Lebanon, which began following the August 2006 Israel-Hizbullah war, is now coming to a head. Two of the country's biggest camps - the March 14 Forces, which constitute the majority in the Lebanese parliament, and the Lebanese opposition headed by Hizbullah - have failed to reach agreement over who will be the country's next president and over the makeup of the next government. These two issues will affect the direction the country will take, whether towards the axis of Syria-Iran-Hizbullah, or towards the moderate Arab camp. If no president is chosen by December 31, 2007, the Lebanese parliament will adjourn for three months, leaving the presidential office vacant for a significant period of time - thus increasing the chances of armed violence in the country.
