Russia: Chief Mufti Threatens "Conflict'' If Russian Orthodox Culture Course Is Taught in Schools

MuftiG.jpgRavil Gainutdin, the head of Russia's Council of Muftis, lashed out today at plans by the Russian government to introduce a course on the culture of Christian Orthodoxy.

Gainutdin (pictured) claimed that plans to introduce the Orthodox culture course violate the Russian constitution's ban on having a state religion. The course, however, only introduces students to Orthodoxy as a cultural phenomenon, and does not propagate the religion.

About 80% of the Russian population espouses Christian Orthodoxy, according to the Russian census, while only about 6% of Russian citizens, or about 8 million people, claim to be Muslim. The Council of Muftis, however, says that figure is closer to 15 percent of the population, or about 20 million people.

On Fascism and Homophobia

The court of Appeal in Douai [Dowaai in Dutch], in the French northern province of Flanders (adjacent to the Belgian Dutch-speaking region of Flanders), has convicted a member of the French Parliament for his views on homosexuality. Christian Vanneste, an MP of the ruling UMP party, had said that “heterosexuality is morally superior to homosexuality.” He also said that “homosexual behaviour endangers the survival of humanity.” This is a statement one is no longer allowed to make in France.

Last year a court of first instance in Lille [Rijsel in Dutch] sentenced Vanneste to a fine of €3,000 (almost $4,000) plus €3,000 in damages to each of the three homosexual activist organizations that had taken him to court. On Thursday the appeal court upheld the verdict, adding a further €500 to the sum which the politician has to pay to the three organizations.

Socialism Perverts the Family

A quote from Oskari Juurikkala at Mises.org, 24 January 2007

“People will always have children,” assured Konrad Adenauer, the German Chancellor, in 1957. He was convinced that the future of the brave new pay-as-you-go social security system would not be undermined by demographic changes. Adenauer was as wrong as ever. […] [S]ocial security replaces children and the family as the main support in old age by literally socializing the traditional duties of the family. Why have children when the state will take care of you in your old age? […]

Every kind of socialism creates perverse incentives, and socialism directed to the family perverts the family.

Sweden: The Country that Sacrifices its Children, and Celebrates

Sweden is a country that has virtually no public debate about mass immigration, which continues at full speed. The Swedish political and media elites pride themselves on their Multicultural goodness. If sacrificing your own children is the definition of good, then exactly what constitutes evil?

The following series of quotes iillustrates the Swedish disease.

From The Local – Sweden’s News in English, 25 January 2007:

Staff at Gustav Adolf School in the southern town of Landskrona have now retracted a controversial ban on the use of languages other than Swedish on school premises. Just days after its introduction the principal has downgraded the ban to a “main rule”. Consequently pupils will now be allowed to speak their native languages during breaks. But, in a new measure, pupils will have to pass two security guards when entering the school. On Saturday it was revealed that the management of the school had decided that only Swedish could be spoken on school premises. Almost half of the pupils at the school come from an immigrant background. The ban was introduced following a number of incidents in which staff and pupils felt they had been insulted in languages they did not understand.

IFES report on Arab media

IFES and the Arab Center for the Development of the Rule of Law and Integrity recently released a report on attitudes towards the media and Parliament in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco.  The picture painted by the surveys of public and expert opinion are grim:  very few citizens in these four countries believe that the media is independent or effective, or that journalists can do their work without fear of punishment.   The most significant findings in the general public opinion surveys:

  • 22% of Jordanians, 31% of Egyptians, 50% of Moroccans, and 77% of Lebanese felt that journalists "enjoy freedom of expression without fear of reprisal." 58% of Jordanians, 48% of Egyptians, 45% of Moroccans, and 16% of Lebanese felt that journalists did not.
  • 25% of Egpytians, 24% of Jordanians, 52% of Moroccans and 68% of Lebanese felt that "the media is able to report openly on all types of issues".  48% of Egyptians, 52% of Jordanians, 21% of Lebanese, and 43% of Moroccans felt they could not.
  • 57% of Egyptians, 58% of Jordanians, 46% of Lebanese, and 54% of Moroccans felt that "the media is influenced/pressured by government to a large degree."  It's interesting that the response by Lebanese on the issue of government influence is so much higher than on questions about intimidation.
  • 23% of Egyptians, 26% of Jordanians, 25% of Lebanese, and 41% of Moroccans felt that "the media provides you with impartial and balanced views."
  • 86% of Egyptians, 81% of Jordanians, 91% of Lebanese, and 90% of Moroccans felt that "reforms are needed to enhance the independence of the media."

Multiculturalism 'drives young Muslims to shun British values'

The doctrine of multi-culturalism has alienated an entire generation of young Muslims and made them increasingly radical, a report has found.

In stark contrast with their parents, growing numbers sympathise with extreme teachings of Islam, with almost four in ten wanting to live under Sharia law in Britain.

Radical Islam as bad as BNP, says Cameron

'Naked X-rays on lampposts' to single out terror suspects

The study identifies significant support for wearing the veil in public, Islamic schools and even punishment by death for Muslims who convert to another religion.

Most alarmingly, 13 per cent of young Muslims said they "admired" organisations such as Al Qaeda which are prepared to "fight the West".

It’s been apparent for some time that the Danes are way ahead of everyone else in the West in their strategies for dealing with Islam. I recommend studying the Danish model — in future, those countries that successfully turn back the Islamist tide will be the ones that most emulate Denmark.

The Danish blogger (and 910 Group member) Zonka has translated a feature article from yesterday’s Jyllands-Posten. In it you will find a breath of fresh air on the immigration issue, an uncommon amount of common sense.

Translator’s note: In this article, author and philosopher Kai Sørlander writes about the divide between the proponents of multiculturalism and immigration, whom he calls optimists, and the xenophobes and Islamophobes, here labelled pessimists. Below is my translation of the article.

A Global Jihadi Umbrella for Strategy and Ideology: The Covenant of the Supreme Council of Jihad Groups

By Reuven Paz

Introduction

On January 14, 2007, one of the leading Jihadi-Salafi scholars, the Kuwaiti Sheikh Hamed bin Abdallah al-Ali, published a new and interesting document on his website t titled “The Covenant of the Supreme Council of Jihad Groups (Mithaq al-Majles al-A`la li-Fasael al-Jihad).[1] The document was immediately circulated in Jihadi forums and as expected received enthusiastic support. The document is the first of its kind since Osama bin Laden and his colleagues issued the declaration of the founding of the World Islamist Front against the Crusaders and the Jews in February 1998. That declaration had symbolized the formation of the organizational framework that had in fact formed Al-Qaeda or Qa’idat al-Jihad as a front. Although, Al-Qaeda has emerged in several forms ever since, it is perhaps best understood as a front organization.

Al-Qaeda has been compelled to mutate into an umbrella front for various local Jihadi-Salafi groups due to a number of developments. These include the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in December 2001, the U.S. occupation of Iraq in March-May 2003, and the subsequent emergence of the Sunni Jihadi insurgency there. Although the local Jihadi-Salafi groups have managed to carry out many terrorist attacks, all over the world, acting under a variety of local and global targets, they have been directed according to a rather unified strategy. That strategy has been directed by several elements:

Iran prepares people for 'messiah miracles'

Government broadcasts series on imminent appearance of apocalyptic Islamic 'Mahdi'

Official Iranian radio has completed broadcasting a lengthy series on the imminent appearance of a messianic figure who will defeat Islam's enemies and impose Islamic Shiite rule over the entire world – even speculating on specific dates the so-called "Mahdi" will be revealed.

English-language transcripts of "The World Toward Illumination" programs can be found on the website of IRIB, a public broadcast arm of Tehran.

"Be joyous my heart, miracles of the Messiah will soon be here," reads a poem used to conclude the first broadcast. "The scent of breaths of the One we know comes from near. Grieve not of sorrow and melancholy, as assured I was … last night that a Savior will come, it's clear."

After the coming of the 12th imam, or Mahdi, "liberal democratic civilization" will be found only in "history museums," explained the program.

The Karbala attack and the IRGC

The Iranians may be responsible the conducting the attack that resulted in the murder of five American soldiers in Karbala

On January 20th, a team of twelve men disguised as U.S. soldiers entered the Provincial Joint Coordination Center in Karbala, where U.S. soldiers conducted a meeting with local officials, and attacked and killed five soldiers, and wounded another three. The initial reports indicated the five were killed in the Karbala JCC, however the U.S. military has reported that four of those killed were actually removed from the center, handcuffed, and murdered.

The American Forces Information Service provides the details of the attack in Karbala. Based on the sophisticated nature of the raid, as well as the response, or cryptic non-responses, from multiple military and intelligence sources, this raid appears to have been directed and executed by the Qods Force branch of the Iranian Republican Guard Corps. My sources agreed this is far to sophisticated an operation for the Mahdi Army or Badr Corps, while al-Qaeda in Iraq would have a difficult time mounting such an operation in the Shia south. "The Karbala Government Center raid the other day was a little too professional for JAM [Jaish al-Mahdi, or the Mahdi Army]," according to a military source.

France and the Iranian Revolution

Now that the Islamic Republic of Iran is in the news with its suspected nuclear weapons program, it could be good to pause and reflect for a moment on who contributed to the Islamic Republic being established in the late 1970s, probably the one event next to the influx of oil money to Saudi Arabia – and possibly the establishment of the Eurabian networks which all happened in the 70s – that was chiefly responsible for the global resurgence of Jihad. The inaction and general incompetence displayed by former US President Jimmy Carter, today an apologist for the Islamic Jihad against Israel, certainly contributed, but we mustn’t forget former French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

The irony is that while the Ayatollah Khomeini could establish an Islamic state directed from the suburbs of Paris, the French 30 years later have hundreds of Islamic mini-states on French soil. Khomeini and his cronies used this window of opportunity at a critical stage of the uprising against the Shah to consolidate their power and establish their lead over the direction of which the Revolution was heading.

Internet Security Company Cracks Special Jihadist Software

By Andrew Cochran

CT Blog posting from Jim Melnick, iDefense Intelligence Team, VeriSign, Inc.

On January 1, 2007, the pro-terrorist group, "Global Islamic Media Front" (GIMF) announced the "imminent release" of what they called "the first Islamic computer program for secure exchange on the Internet." Some Western websites that track online terrorist activity reported on the GIMF announcement, but it has otherwise not received any serious media attention. iDefense/VeriSign has since found a copy of this program, "Mujahedine Secrets," on a pro-terrorist Arabic language forum and has begun analyzing its capabilities and assessing what its impact will be. Earlier this week we announced this to our client base, which includes numerous key elements of the U.S. government. We are continuing to discover new aspects about the software, which we believe is bound to spread quickly in the online pro-terrorist world. As far as is known, none of this new information has been announced publicly anywhere else other than among the pro-terrorists themselves.

Islamists struggling with the Shia question

Some prominent Muslim Brotherhood and related Sunni Islamists have been struggling publicly with the rising Sunni-Shia conflict recently.   At last week's Doha conference on Sunni-Shia relations, Yusuf al-Qaradawi caused a major stir with a forceful intervention demanding that the Shia stop their proselytizing in Sunni-majority countries and that Iran stop contributing to sectarian killing in Iraq.  This was distressing for several reasons.    It isn't just that he's extremely influential with mainstream Islamist-minded audiences.    It's that Qaradawi has always had exceptionally well-tuned political antennae - he's a political populist with a great ear for what is going to play well with his audiences.  That makes him a good barometer for trends in certain important sectors of Arab public opinion - when he decides to jump on an anti-Shia bandwagon, it probably means that he senses that this is going to be a popular position.   Qaradawi has long advocated good Sunni-Shia relations, and has been scathingly critical of efforts to promote anti-Shia attitudes (one of his ongoing arguments with the salafi trend) - which made his public lashing out against the Shia much more unsettling than similar outbursts from traditionally anti-Shia voices.

Arab Human Development Report: The Plight of Arab Women for Equality

By: Nimrod Raphaeli

The Arab Human Development Report2005 (AHDR): Towards the Rise of Women in the Arab World is the fourth in a series of reports on human development in the Arab world prepared under the auspices of, and issued, by the United Nations Development Programme. The report was launched in San’a, the capital of Yemen on December 7, 2006. [1]

In the Foreword to the report, Saudi prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, the President of the Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organizations and a Saudi prince, made an attempt to disassociate religion from the adverse conditions and, often, the abuses, discrimination, and maltreatment suffered by women in the Arab world. Prince Talal writes:

"Religion has no connection with any of the mistaken practices that are carried out against women. Our societies, however, give precedence to custom over true worship and provide foundations for assumptions that have no grounding either in the Holy Koran or in the authenticated practices and sayings of the Prophet (the Hadith)."

Living in a Socialist Utopia.

In 2005 the people of France and Holland voted no to the proposed European constitution. Now instead of going back to the drawing board the mandarins at the EU have proposed that we carry on regardless.

Hang on, let me get this straight. The Union of Europe which is supposed to listen to the people isn’t listening to them and instead is doing what it wishes to. The funny thing is this isn’t the first time that the mandarins at the EU haven’t listened to the people.

Marxism or Decadence? The Cause of Western Weakness

The Fjordman Report

The noted blogger Fjordman is filing this report via Gates of Vienna.
For a complete Fjordman blogography, see The Fjordman Files. There is also a multi-index listing here.

I sometimes am criticized for being too focused on the left-wing of the political spectrum and ignoring the problems caused by right-wing parties. First of all, the line of separation between what constitutes “Left” and “Right” in politics now tends to become blurred. And second of all, only a fool believes that everybody on one side is always right, and everybody on the other side is always wrong. I have been consistent in pointing out that the European Union, which I loathe, cannot be explained simply as a one-sided Leftist endeavor. It also contains elements of Big Business interests, political corruption and the general desire of politicians and bureaucrats to rid themselves of the restrictions imposed on them by a democratic society. Brussels Berserk: Belgium Forbids 18 and 88

Patrick Dewael, the Belgian minister of the Interior, has forbidden the wearing of football shirts displaying the numbers 18 and 88. According to the Liberal minister the number 18 stands for “Adolf Hitler” and the number 88 for “Heil Hitler.” A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, H the 8th.

The numbers 37 (Che Guevara) or 13 (Mao) are not forbidden. Neither are the popular T-shirts with Che Guevara’s portrait.

One reader in a Brussels paper wondered whether citizens living in houses with the numbers 18 and 88 will be blacklisted as Nazis by the authorities. Young people born in 1988, who have email addresses containing their year of birth, are worried too.

Washington Soon to Release Evidence of Hostile Iranian Activity in Iraq

US ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad and State department spokesman Sean McCormack said the US would soon present evidence of Iran’s hand in the violence besetting Iraq. The ambassador stressed too that the charges against the Revolutionary Guards al Quds Brigade agents detained at the Iranian “liaison center” in Irbil on Jan 11 would be made public. The detainees are still in custody. McCormack spoke of “solid evidence” that Iranian agents sent by the Iranian government are working with individuals and groups in Iraq. He quoted President Bush who vowed to confront the networks and individuals “trying to harm our troops.”

Eight days after the US raid on Irbil, DEBKA-Net-Weekly 286 exclusively revealed some of the evidence referred to by the two US officials of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’s direct involvement in terrorist operations in Iraq.

Guess who's stealing land?

Palestinian Arabs have so far been guilty, as far as I can tell, of 100% of the crimes that they routinely falsely accuse Jews of committing. This is what is known as "projection" and it happens a lot.

The latest example is that the Palestinian Muslims are stealing Palestinian Christians' land. (Sorry, Jonathan Cook, you have been proven a moron yet again.)
A number of Christian families have finally decided to break their silence and talk openly about what they describe as Muslim persecution of the Christian minority in this city.

The move comes as a result of increased attacks on Christians by Muslims over the past few months. The families said they wrote letters to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Vatican, Church leaders and European governments complaining about the attacks, but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears.

Christianity Rebounding in Holland?

Talk about where you'd least expect a resurgence in Christianity: the militantly secular Netherlands, with its street-level brothels in Amsterdam and hashish cafes. Is a post-Christian country becoming post-secular?  Imagine that!  The Weekly Standard has an interesting article by a Dutch columnist and editor about an apparent resurgence of Christian religiosity in Holland.  "Throughout Western Europe, and also in Holland, liberal Protestantism is in its death throes."  Some examples of the Dutch moving back to God:

  • "Prayer in the workplace is fast becoming a universally accepted phenomenon."
  • Crucifixes and religious artifacts are being reintroduced into Catholic schools (why were they ever removed from Catholic schools??)
  • "Holland's most prestigious literary prizes were awarded in 2005 to books dealing in a sympathetic way with Christian issues of faith and redemption."
  • The bestselling Dutch-language book of the past decade was a new Bible translation published in 2004,
  • "...the number of self-described Christians stopped declining as early as the beginning of the 1990s. Among the under-20s, the number has started to increase in recent years."

Many observers too easily slide over the distinction between "Shia influence" and "Iranian influence".  I think that the distinction is important both in terms of how Washington is developing its strategy and how events are playing out in the region.

Lebanon Inches Toward the Precipice

 By Rick Moran

In what is being referred to by pro-government forces as an attempted coup, Hezb'allah and their allies in the opposition took to the streets on Tuesday in what was billed as a "General Strike" in order to force the government of Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Siniora to capitulate to opposition demands for a "National Unity Government."

Protestors blocked roads with burning tires in what appeared to be an extraordinarily well organized effort to shut down the country. The roadblocks effectively kept tens of thousands of people from commuting to work and many of Lebanon's businesses were closed for the day. Also, the road to the airport was blocked when dump trucks appeared and piled dirt and garbage at strategic locations along the route.

Pro government forces clashed with the opposition at many locations throughout the country, but especially in the north in Tripoli where violence continued Wednesday. All told, at least three deaths were reported and 133 injured. Most of the injuries were from gunshot wounds.

Jihad and Sharia preaching in British mosques, and its implications

hot air britain.jpg

In this week's Jihad Watch videoblog at Hot Air, I discuss the Dispatches documentary that recently uncovered Islamic supremacism being preached in mosques that had been considered moderate. This underscores the necessity of doing what so few dare to do: discuss the elements of Islam that are fueling the jihad. This must be done, for the "extremists" are using those elements of Islam to recruit terrorists, and thus that recruitment cannot be stopped without confronting the way in which it is being done. Contrary to D'Souza, Lowry, and others, this shouldn't hurt and radicalize genuine moderates: if they're serious about Islamic reform, they shouldn't be enraged by a discussion of what needs reforming.

"EU policies suffer to an alarming degree from a lack of democracy and a de facto suspension of the separation of powers."

"By far the biggest part of the current laws in Germany are agreed by the council of ministers [member states representation in Brussels] and not the German parliament," Mr Herzog wrote in a paper with Lüder Gerken, director of the Freiburg-based Centre for European Policy.

My Problem with Jimmy Carter's Book

 by Kenneth W. Stein
Middle East Quarterly
Spring 2007

Jimmy Carter's engagement in foreign affairs as a former president is unprecedented in U.S. history. Because he regards the Arab-Israeli conflict as among Washington's most important foreign policy topics, he has written more than two dozen articles and commentaries about the conflict, eight in the past year alone. In these publications, Carter uses his credibility as a former president, Nobel laureate, and key player in the September 1978 Camp David accords and the Egypt-Israel peace treaty to unfold his set of truths and often to criticize U.S. policy. He relishes the role of elder statesman and believes that with his accrued wisdom and experience, he can contribute to solutions.

But Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,[1] Carter's twenty-first book and his second to focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict, is deficient. He does what no non-fiction author should ever do: He allows ideology or opinion to get in the way of facts. While Carter says that he wrote the book to educate and provoke debate, the narrative aims its attack toward Israel, Israeli politicians, and Israel's supporters. It contains egregious errors of both commission and omission. To suit his desired ends, he manipulates information, redefines facts, and exaggerates conclusions. Falsehoods, when repeated and backed by the prestige of Carter's credentials, can comprise an erroneous baseline for shaping and reinforcing attitudes and policymaking. Rather than bring peace, they can further fuel hostilities, encourage retrenchment, and hamper peacemaking.

EU discounts Russian veto on Kosovo independence

"We have to expect the negotiations will be conducted in such a manner that the resolution will be approved in due course ... but in any case without a veto," Solana said.

Moscow, traditionally an ally of Belgrade, has expressed deep reservations about Kosovo's possible independence and has insisted that any outcome must be acceptable to Serbia. Moscow has a veto in the U.N. Security Council, and Russian diplomats have indicated that they may use it to prevent Kosovo's outright independence from Serbia.

The concentration of ethnic minorities and religious groups in certain schools had created a 'strategic security problem'

An influential government education adviser said today that schools dominated by Muslim children should be closed and replaced with 'multi-faith' academies to integrate pupils.

Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, said the concentration of ethnic minorities and religious groups in certain schools had created a 'strategic security problem'. Lees verder...

Jokes about Islam? You must be beaten or killed

Meet Ewout Jansen, law student in Amsterdam. Ewout is a funny guy. In fact he's the Dutch version of a stand up comedian (known as a 'cabaretier'). Ewout is also a brave guy, fearless in his choice of targets for his jokes. In fact, he makes more then one joke about islam (note the forbidden sign with a subtle goatf*cker motif).

And that has gotten Ewout in a spot of bother. Although the islam jokes are only a small segment of his routine, it often earns him very negative reactions, from abusive language to being stormed on stage. In civilized circles that is not deemed very tolerant. In civilized circles one politely laughs at the jokes of a cabaretier no matter how tasteless. That is why the Amsterdam university paper Folia contacted the board of the Assoena mosque to get their reaction on the uncouth behavior of members of their flock. Lees verder...

Tony Blair And Bribes To Islamist Saudi Arabia

Tony Blair, Bribes. And Saudi Arabia

By Adrian Morgan

The Eurofighter, or Typhoon, is a twin-engine combat aircraft which has been designed "by committee". Its planning stems back to 1979, but it first went onto the drawing board in Germany in 1986. The company Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH was formed in this year, and designers from different European aerospace companies joined to design the plane.

Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy were involved in the plane's design, and they are all involved in manufacturing specific parts, though each of the four component companies can assemble an entire fighter. The British company is BAE Systems based in Farnborough, Hampshire, which emerged after a merger of British Aerospace (BAe) and Marconi Electronic Systems in 1999. BAE is the fourth largest defense contractor in the world.

Islam converts change face of Europe

As many as 100,000 French and British citizens have converted to Islam over the last decade, according to a new book by an Israeli historian.

The figures cited by Hebrew University Prof. Raphael Israeli in his upcoming book The Third Islamic Invasion of Europe are representative of the fast-changing face of Europe, which the Islamic history professor says is in danger of becoming "Eurabia" within half a century.

He noted that about 30 million Muslims currently live in Europe, out of a total population of 380 million., adding that with a high Muslim birthrate in Europe, the number of Muslims living in the continent is likely to double within 25 years.

Tagesspiegel berichtet ausführlich über Migrantengewalt

tagesspiegel_logo.png
Was ist passiert?

Will Al Gore Melt?

If not, why did he chicken out on an interview?

BY FLEMMING ROSE AND BJORN LOMBORG
Sunday, January 21, 2007 12:01 a.m. EST

Al Gore is traveling around the world telling us how we must fundamentally change our civilization due to the threat of global warming. Last week he was in Denmark to disseminate this message. But if we are to embark on the costliest political project ever, maybe we should make sure it rests on solid ground. It should be based on the best facts, not just the convenient ones. This was the background for the biggest Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, to set up an investigative interview with Mr. Gore. And for this, the paper thought it would be obvious to team up with Bjorn Lomborg, author of "The Skeptical Environmentalist," who has provided one of the clearest counterpoints to Mr. Gore's tune.

DEBKAfile Exclusive: Moqtada Sadr ends boycott of Iraqi government and parliament in move to avert Iraqi-US crackdown on his Mehdi Army militia in Baghdad

He has also warned the Palestinians living in Iraq, most of them Sunni Muslims, they will be killed unless they leave the country immediately.

The Sadrist parliamentary bloc of 30 and its six ministers ended their two-month boycott Sunday, Jan. 21, clearing the way for Shiite PM Nouri al-Maliki to muster majority support for the planned US-Iraqi security crackdown in Baghdad. This was one of several steps taken by Sadr to save his Mehdi Army militia, the largest Shiite private army, and their strongholds in Baghdad’s Sadr City from being targeted as the source of much of the sectarian violence besetting the capital.

Surveying the Sunni-Shia question

The other day I reported from Egypt my surprise at the remarkable rise of the "Shia question" there.  Since then, it's only gotten more prominent.  Just look at what's going on at a conference on Sunni-Shia relations being held in Doha.  A few days ago, Yusuf al-Qaradawi - who has long preached tolerance towards the Shia - made waves by accusing Iran of instigating sectarian strife.  Yesterday, Ahmed al-Tayib of al-Azhar complained about the profusion of pro-Shia books in Egypt, accusing Shia of proselytizing among the Sunni.  (The idea that a lot of Sunnis are converting to Shi'ism is bizarrely widespread given that I haven't been able to track down even a single documented case of it.)  Hazem Saghiye noted a couple of weeks ago the growing use of "Persian" as a descriptor in Arab discourse - which should set off alarm bells.  Saudi Arabia has always had a nasty anti-Shia undercurrent, but its language and obsessions seem to be going mainstream in the Arab public discourse - we're seeing it as far afield as Algeria. Storm Track Disinformation: Muslims – Soul Searching or Mental Illness?

At a recent debate over the battle for Islamic ideals in England , a British-born Muslim stood before the crowd and said Prophet Mohammed's message to nonbelievers is: "I come to slaughter all of you. We are the Muslims," said Omar Brooks, an extremist also known as Abu Izzadeen. "We drink the blood of the enemy, and we can face them anywhere. That is Islam and that is jihad."

But in the same debate, held on the prestigious grounds of Dublin's Trinity College in October, many people in the crowd objected. One dissenter said: "These people, ladies and gentleman, have a good look at them. They actually believe if you kill women and children, you will go to heaven," said one young Muslim who waved his finger at the radicals.

"This is not ideology,” one young Muslim man said waving his finger at the radicals. “It's a mental illness."

DEBKAfile Exclusive: Hizballah puts a tight rein on UN peacekeepers’ movements and policing operations in S. Lebanon - with threats to their safety

The Shiite terrorist group last week set up military checkpoints and roadblocks to keep UN troops off the main roads connecting the Lebanese-Israeli border to Shiite villages and small towns in the south. Hizballah warned UN commanders that monitors flouting Hizballah’s injunctions and conducting searches would be fired on.

These restrictions box the international force, expanded by the Security Council last August to keep the whole of S. Lebanon free of armed men except for the Lebanese army, into a narrow border strip. Hizballah has again manned its pre-war border positions – albeit by unarmed operatives – and their yellow flags are flying from their roofs. But most dangerously, Hizballah has moved most of its weapons stockpiles into the blocked villages in breach of the ceasefire rules and is anxious to keep them out of sight of UN monitors.

Muslims in police will rise up, Bakri insists

By Mike Hirst and Adam Lusher, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 12:02am GMT 21/01/2007

Moderate British Muslims in the police, Armed Forces and Civil Service will one day revolt against the system to "crush it from within", according to Omar Bakri Mohammed, the notorious Islamic extremist.

Omar Bakri Mohammed
Omar Bakri Mohammed claimed that the world was a better place after the July 7 bombings in London

In claims condemned as a cynical attempt to create division, the co-founder of the extremist al-Muhajiroun group said that Britain was "digging a deep hole" for itself by allowing Muslims into the Services and Whitehall.

Speaking exclusively to The Sunday Telegraph in Lebanon, where he moved in August 2005 — at about the time it emerged the British authorities might charge him with incitement to treason — he claimed police officers, soldiers and civil servants would one day become radicalised.

"When you start to ask Muslims to join your Army and your police you are making a grave mistake. That British Muslim who joins the police today will one day read the Koran and will have an awakening," he said.

"Those moderates are one day going to be practising Muslims. Now what happens if they are British police or in the Army and they have weapons? How much information do they have about you that they will use to serve the global struggle?

"They will revolt against the system if they have been failed by your foreign policy which is oppressive against Islam, or have been contacted by people who believe Britain is a domain of war."

In remarks almost certain to cause widespread anger among the survivors and relatives of victims, he also claimed that the world was a better place after the July 7 bombings in London. "I believe it is a better place for Islam and Muslims… but not for non-Muslims. What's happening around the world is good and positive for Islam."

The comments were condemned by moderate Muslim leaders. Ibrahim Mogra, the chairman of the Interfaith Relations Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: "This is part of an attempt to create divisions both within the Muslim community and the wider society.

"On the contrary, the more a Muslim police officer becomes a practising Muslim, the more loyal he will become, the more he will realise his duty to his country and the need to contribute to its well-being."

He added: "People are entitled to their views, but we actually have our own scholars and imams, who are still in this country, not abroad, and who talk about contributing to Britain and the responsibilities that we have to it."

Bakri Mohammed came to Britain in 1985 after being expelled from Saudi Arabia. He was rapidly derided as "the Tottenham Ayatollah". His inflammatory pronouncements have included calling the September 11 terrorists the "Magnificent 19".

He disbanded al-Muhajiroun in 2004. Shortly after the July 7 attacks Tony Blair announced the group would be banned as part of a series of measures against condoning or glorifying terrorism.

After Bakri Mohammed left for Beirut he was banned from returning to Britain. The Government deemed his presence "no longer conducive to the public good".

In Beirut last week, a relaxed Bakri Mohammed sipped freshly-squeezed strawberry juice in an upmarket restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean.

He took pleasure in hearing media reports about Abid Javaid, 41, of Thornton Heath, Surrey, a civil servant in the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, who was exposed late last year as a leading member of the extremist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), which Mr Blair had wanted to ban.

This was despite Bakri Mohammed's admission: "I left HT in 1996 and they condemn what I stand for."

Bakri Mohammed readily confirmed that he had officiated at the wedding of Pc Alexander Omar Basha, his relative by marriage.

In October, however, when the diplomatic protection officer faced controversy after being excused guard duties at the Israeli embassy, Bakri Mohammed admitted Pc Basha's views were far more moderate than his own and even complained: "If I'd have known [he was a policeman at the time of the wedding] I would never have married them. My advice to all Muslims in the police is to leave their jobs."

Schweiz: Bevölkerung will straffällige Jugendliche ausbürgern

Political group files Charges against police and minister

Friday the party Stop Islamification of Denmark (SIAD) filed charges against Lene Espersen and Copenhagen Police, personified by chief police inspector Per Larsen and police director Hanne Bech. The step was taken because SIAD is furious that the police according to the party have not put enough resources in on solving a violent attack on several members of the party, and because Copenhagen Police have disallowed a demonstration by the party on Blågårdsgade on Nørrebro.

Dispatch from the Eurabian Front: Of Mice and Men

While their country is bracing itself for ethnic violence the Dutch worry about mice. The Dutch Party for Animals (PvdD) has forbidden the laying of poison to eradicate mice in its parliamentary offices. The party, which campaigns for animal rights and compassionate farming, will only allow “humane traps” in the parliament wing where its offices are housed. The office space at the Dutch Parliament in The Hague is notorious for attracting mice. “As yet, I have not seen a single mouse here,” said the newly elected PvdD leader Marianne Thieme. “But should we ever have mice we would wish to combat them using traps that keep them alive.”

In Germany, meanwhile, the number of Germans who have converted to Islam has increased fourfold within one year – despite the negative perception of Islam among the general public. According to a study by the Islam Archive Germany and financed by the Interior Ministry, some 4,000 Germans converted to Islam between July 2004 and June 2005. The annual number of converts remained constant – at about 300 – until three years ago. Added to the influx of Muslim immigrants in the country, German Muslims may constitute a majority in the country by 2046.

Ahtisaari's Kosovo Status Recommendation Seen To Cause EU Splits

BRUSSELS (AP)--European Union officials and diplomats in Belgium expect U.N. mediator Martti Ahtisaari to recommend limited independence for Serbia's breakaway province of Kosovo when he submits his proposal on the future of the region that has been a U.N. protectorate since 1999.

The ruling, which must ultimately be approved by the U.N. Security Council, is likely to result in a diplomatic clash between Russia - which strongly backs Belgrade's claims that Kosovo should remain part of Serbia - and Washington, which has backed independence for the territory.

It could also result in a tug-of-war within the E.U. between countries that oppose any secession - including Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia - and those that have backed it, such as the U.K., the Netherlands and others.

UK: Big Brother Goody's Mum Is A Muslim

The issue of 25-year old Jade Goody, the pug-faced former dental nurse from Bermondsey, and her treatment of Shilpa Shetty, the Bollywood movie star, has caused shock waves in the media. 40,000 people have complained about Goody's apparent racism on the "Celebrity Big Brother Show", aired on Channel 4.

Jade Goody was unknown until she was a contestant on Big Brother in 2002. Her foul-mouthed appearance, where she also appeared to perform oral sex under a duvet with a balding contestant called "PJ", propelled her to fame and fortune. She is now a millionaire, said to be worth 8 million pounds ($15.8 million) from promotions and TV appearances, and she recently launched a diet and keep-fit DVD.

It has been rumored that the weight loss that Goody achieved was not, as claimed on the DVD from a healthy diet and exercise regime, but the result of liposuction. Last night, Goody was evicted, receiving 82% of the votes. Her mother "Jackiey" (sic) appeared briefly on the show at one stage. SImon Heffer in the Telegraph today called Goody and her mother "hideous harridans".

DEBKAfile reports: Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in talks in Damascus Saturday night. A high Iranian official is keeping tabs on Asad and Meshaal

The live wires behind them are Palestinian tycoon Muhammad Rashid and Fatah activist Nabil Amar, who is now working for Hamas. They are in Damascus pushing hard for an Abbas-Mashaal meeting and have drafted a “Document of Principles for the Establishment of a Palestinian government,” for them to sign.

Iran's state-run prostitution and slavery ring

Here is an amazing article about what is really going on in that enlightened nation that aims to be the model of Islamic morality and integrity in the world:
...Iran's new Islamic-guided government has established a system of legalized prostitution, through the practice of "sigheh" or "temporary marriages," by which a mullah arranges a "legal union" between a man and a girl (some as young as nine years old) for a fee. The so-called marriage can last anywhere from one hour to 99 years. Under this system, men are free to enter into as many temporary marriages as they so desire, without having any legal obligation or responsibility toward the women and children that they "marry" only to use as sexual objects and slaves.

Incoming fatwa in three... two... one...

Dutch Foreign affairs minister Ben Bot got himself into hot water today. In a small Brazilian newspaper, called the Correio Braziliense he commented on the character of some minorities in Dutch society:
There is a small group of immigrants that carries intolerance in their genes
Nothing shocking, really. Except when one is a Turkish journo, particularly if one works for the Turkish Daily News:
Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot claimed this week that 'genes' are behind Muslim intolerance in his country that played a role in a politician's murder and complicated the integration of immigrants in his country. 'They have different genes, so they are less tolerant. The murderers of Pim Fortuyn and Theo Van Gogh taught us a lesson,' Bot said in comments published Tuesday in Brazilian daily Correio Braziliense. Other comments, and his inference that race played a role in the murders of two Dutch political figures, drew reaction in Brazil that is likely to echo elsewhere.
As Geenstijl (NL) points out, reaction in the muslim world seems to be swift and abundant, as it usually is in these cases of slighted 'innocense'.

And as usual there is close to nothing about it in Dutch MSM. I just hope our embassies have been advised on the situation. Time to stock up on fire extinguishers, methinks.

Europe's Anti-American Blinders

By Pamela Meister

Europe needs to hate us for its own reasons having nothing to do with American behavior. In an essay adapted from his forthcoming book Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America, Andrei S. Markovits writes:
Anti-Americanism has already commenced to forge a concrete, emotionally experienced - as opposed to intellectually constructed - European identity, in which Swedes and Greeks, Finns and Italians are helped to experience their still-frail emotive commonality not as "anti-Americans" but as Europeans, which at this stage constitutes one sole thing: that they are "non-Americans."
In other words, Europeans are building a common society not as Europeans, but as non-Americans, much in the way that John Kerry ran for president in 2004 - not on any solid Democratic plan, but as a non-George Bush. As John Kerry lost his 2004 presidential bid, will Europeans fail in their bid to become a solid European community?

UK: Muslim Woman Refuses To Sell Cigarettes

We have had Muslims at Minneapolis/St Paul airport refusing to take passengers in their taxis who were thought to carry alcohol in their luggage, and in Britain, Muslim cab-drivers refusing to take blind passengers if they are accompanied by guide dogs.

Now comes a story from the Cambridge Evening News, of a Muslim store worker who refuses to sell cigarettes to customers, even though they are on sale in the shop.

A 31 year old woman went into the branch of WH Smith in Market Street, Cambridge, to buy a packet of 20 Lambert & Butler cigarettes. The Muslim woman behind the counter refused.

The customer said that "the woman behind the desk asked me if they were cigarettes. When I said they were she told me that it was against her religion to sell them - I couldn't believe my ears. I rang up the manager to complain and he said the shop assistant has to ask someone else to serve them for her if a customer wants tobacco. If she had just said, I can't serve you, then that would have been fair enough, but the thing that really annoyed me was the way she gave me a lecture as well. She started saying she doesn't agree with smoking, that it kills you - I was really gob-smacked."

Russia and the Middle East

by Igor Khrestin and John Elliott
Middle East Quarterly
Winter 2007

Where does Moscow stand in the fight against Islamism and the global war against terror? Facing the Chechen threat at home, the Russian government might be sympathetic to U.S. and even Israeli concerns. Not so. Despite U.S. declarations that Washington and Moscow were "increasingly united by common values" and that Russia was "a partner in the war on terror,"[1] examination of Russian president Vladimir Putin's policy toward the Middle East suggests that Moscow has become an impediment both to the fight against Islamist terror and Washington's desire to promote democracy in the Middle East. The 2006 U.S. National Security Strategy reinforces that U.S. policymakers should not only "encourage Russia to respect the values of freedom and democracy at home" but also cease "imped[ing] the cause of freedom and democracy" in regions vital to the war on terror.[2] While Russian officials denounce U.S. criticism, the Kremlin's coddling of Iranian hard-liners, its reaction to the "cartoon jihad," its invitation to Hamas to Moscow, and its flawed Chechen policy all cast doubt on Moscow's motivations.

Alleged Tunisian plot & GSPC's influence in N. Africa

By Lorenzo Vidino

Unreported by most Western media, it appears that Tunisian authorities have dismantled a serious terrorist threat against Western interests (mostly embassies) in the North African country. According to government reports, Tunisian security forces engaged a large "Salafist terrorist group" in different operations between the end of December and the beginning of January. Twelve militants were reported killed and fifteen arrested.

The operation is significant for various reasons:

The group, composed mostly of Tunisians, was reported to have crossed into Tunisia from the Algerian desert, where they had established links with the Algerian GSPC. Various experts on this blog have repeatedly warned about the danger posed by the GSPC (most recently Evan Kohlmann reported about the latest tape in which the group confirmed its allegiance to Bin Laden and threatened various Western governments, aside from the Bouteflika government). One of the aspects of the threat posed by the GSPC is its support to other less organized Salafi outfits in the region. The first week of January, for example, Moroccan authorities dismantled a radical Islamist network recruiting volunteers to fight in Iraq and arrested 62 people. According to Moroccan authorities the network had solid ideological, financial and operational ties to the GSPC.

Imams leaving Holland. The exodus begins.

Holland is on my list of favourite countries. It is warmer there than Denmark, the Dutch are generally friendly and they make excellent beer. Amsterdam is possibly my favourite European city.
Imagine my joy at reading the following:

Imams, that were not born in Holland, are leaving Holland and returning to their homelands. The reason? They feel that they are no longer welcome in Holland, according to the vice president in the Dutch organisation for imams, Mohamed Ousala.
"The situation is critical. Dozens of imams from Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht have left and the tendency is continuing in other places."

And then he makes the usual threat, saying that he fears that the more radical types will step in and replace the imams. Ousalah fears that those mosques that do not have an imam will be used by the extremists to further their agenda. As if they weren't extremist enough already. Which is probably why the Dutch don't make them feel welcome in the first place. That may be a good thing. The more radical they become, the more unwelcome they will be.
At present there are 180 out 450 mosques without imams. Lees verder...

Saudi Arabia's Export Of Radical Islam - Part Two

Saudi Arabia's influence in establishing mosques around the world has been condoned by the House of Saud. In 1963, Belgium had a small Muslim population, and in a small rented building in a Brussels suburb, the Islamic Center of Belgium (CIB) began its life. The following year, King Faisal visited Belgium. A virulent anti-semite, Faisal is said to have been convinced by the 19th century anti-semitic Russian forgery - "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and disseminated copies throughout his kingdom. During the Saudi monarch's visit to Belgium, King Baudouin gave him a plot of land, in a prime parkland site in Molenbeek, Brussels. In 1968, Faisal approved Saudi government funding of the construction of a CIB mosque in this new location.

After Faisal's assassination in March 1975, his successor, King Khaled Ibn Abdul Aziz al-Saud opened the "Grand Mosque" of the CIB in 1978. It remains the largest mosque in Belgium. The CIB controls other smaller mosques. Despite royal patronage, the CIB is not exempt from accusations of extremism.

Saudi Arabia's Export of Radical Islam - Part Three

On Monday, January 15, UK television aired a documentary on Channel Four, entitled "Undercover Mosques". This program has caused something of a seismic shock, with reactions to its broadcast being felt in Canada, Pakistan and Israel . It has also led to government reaction in Australia.

I have uploaded a small QuickTime version of the documentary, which can be accessed here. It is 106 mb in size. Alternatively, versions can be found on HotAir and YouTube and HERE (Flash Player required). The documentary needs to be seen in its entirety.

Channel Four sent an undercover reporter to the Green Lane mosque in Birmingham, where he filmed secretly for four months. This mosque is the headquarters of the Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith. The preachers at this mosque were shown inciting hate against "unbelievers", called disparagingly "Kuffaar" or "kaffir".

The Abduction of the Israeli Soldiers Was an 'Unsuccessful Adventure'

In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa, former Hizbullah secretary-general Sheikh Subhi Al-Tufeili saidthat Hizbullah was part of Iranian intelligence, and called the July 12, 2006 abduction of two Israeli soldiers, which sparked the July-August 2006 war with Israel, an "unsuccessful adventure."

The following are excerpts from the interview. [1]

Hizbullah is an Integral part of the Irtanian Intelligence Apparatus

Question: "You were formerly Hizbullah secretary-general. Is the [situation in Lebanon] within the strategic framework of Hizbullah? Does Hizbullah have an outlined and prepared plan that is being implemented today? Why do you think Hizbullah has become a source of anxiety for the Lebanese? "

Al-Tufeili: "It wasn't like this in the beginning. Hizbullah's activity was limited to resistance [operations]... But, unfortunately, the problem has developed today to the point where they have succeeded in changing Hizbullah from a resistance force into a tool to be used in [whatever] direction they want."

The Qur'anic Concept of War

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph C. Myers, the Senior Army Advisor to the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, has published in Parameters a superb review of Pakistani Brigadier S. K. Malik's The Quranic Concept of War, which I discussed at some length in my book Onward Muslim Soldiers.

The universalism of Islam, in its all-embracing creed, is imposed on the believers as a continuous process of warfare, psychological and political, if not strictly military. . . . The Jihad, accordingly, may be stated as a doctrine of a permanent state of war, not continuous fighting.” — Majid Khadduri

[...]

To understand war, one has to study its philosophy; the grammar and logic of your opponent. Only then are you approaching strategic comprehension. To understand the war against Islamist terrorism one must begin to understand the Islamic way of war, its philosophy and doctrine, the meanings of jihad in Islam—and one needs to understand that those meanings are highly varied and utilitarian depending on the source.

Police unsurprised by 7th honor killing in Ramle family

By Roni Singer-Heruti

The discovery of the body of 19-year-old Hamda Abu-Ganem in her home in the Ramle neighborhood of Juarish didn't surprise Ramle Police Superintendent Yigal Ezra. Although many people, including Ezra, tried to help Abu-Ganem run from the fate that awaited her, she remained in her parents' house - and became the seventh woman in her family to be murdered in an "honor killing" in as many years. Three youths were arrested for the crime yesterday and are expected to face a remand hearing today.

"A few young criminals in Juarish set up a group that decides which of the women has violated the honor of the family," said Ezra. "For instance, if a woman spoke to someone on a cell phone, or laughed with a man, that is sometimes considered a violation of the family honor, from their perspective. They plan how the murder will take place, who will carry it out and even find an alibi for the murderer. From the moment someone is marked, there is no way out."

Saudi Arabia's Export Of Radical Islam - Part One

Saudi Arabia's Export Of Radical Islam

By Adrian Morgan

Over the last week, several items in the world news have highlighted the problem of Saudi Arabia, a supposed ally in the War on Terror, funding mosques which promote the same extremism and calls for jihad which create terror. There is a certain hypocrisy about the Saudis exporting any form of Islam abroad, as the undemocratic kingdom prohibits any symbols of other faiths from being imported. Crucifixes, Bibles are forbidden. Guest workers proliferate in the kingdom, but if any of these attempt to hold Christian prayer and worship, they are jailed.

Saudi Arabia is listed by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom as one of the "countries of particular concern", for its violations. Under the terms of the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA), Saudi Arabia is placed on a watch list by the US State Department. In September 2005, Eritrea became the first nation to be given sanctions under the terms of the IRFA yet Saudi Arabia, whose repression equals Eritrea, was given a 180 day "waiver", to allow it time for "continuation of discussions leading to progress on important religious freedom issues."

Turkey plans to extend gas, oil and water pipelines to Israel

By The Associated Press

Turkey and Israel have tentatively agreed on building a network of pipelines to ship oil, natural gas and water from Turkey to Israel, the The Turkish Energy Ministry said Tuesday.

Under the project, a pipeline already carrying Russian natural gas to Turkey will be extended to deliver supplies to Israel, the ministry said. The deal was reached earlier this month during a visit to Israel by Energy Minister Hilmi Guler, the ministry said.

It was not clear when the deal would be finalized or when construction would begin.

The End of Israeli Military Restraint

Out with the New, in with the Old

by Or Honig
Middle East Quarterly
Winter 2007

Between 1948 and 1993, Israel relied on a policy of strategic deterrence to ensure peace and security. If Israel was attacked from beyond its borders, it responded with disproportionate force. For example, on October 1, 1985, Israeli air force fighter planes bombed the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Tunisia, killing fifty-six Palestinian terrorists, in response to the PLO murder of three Israeli tourists in Cyprus.[1] However, after Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin signed the Oslo accords in 1993, Israel adopted a policy of strategic restraint. But rather than bring peace, the shift to a policy of restraint furthered insecurity. On July 12, 2006, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert returned Israel to a policy of strategic deterrence when he ordered massive retaliation against Lebanon for a Hezbollah cross-border attack and kidnapping earlier that day. While many Israeli analysts and politicians criticize the Israeli military performance in Lebanon,[2] the return to a policy of deterrence was necessary for Israel's long-term peace and security.

The Turkey Question: The EU and the Concept of Borders

The acceptance speech made last Sunday by Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s Interior Minister and now Union pour un Mouvement Populaire presidential candidate, has attracted considerable attention for its references to Turkey’s European future. Sarkozy categorically stated that “Turkey has no place in the European Union,” that Europe “must give itself borders,” and that “not all countries have a vocation to become members of Europe, beginning with Turkey which has no place inside the European Union.”

According to Sarkozy, “enlarging Europe with no limit risks destroying European political union, and that I do not accept.” The presidential hopeful’s hard-line position on Turkey’s EU membership bid stands in contrast to his opponent in the upcoming presidential race, Socialist Segolene Royal, who is on record as saying that her opinion with respect to Turkey is whatever “is that of the French people” (to my mind rather empty populist waffle).

The Fatah-Hamas Conflict in the Palestinian Authority

By David Schenker

There have been some very interesting developments in the Palestinian Authority (PA) of late as fighting has escalated between the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) faction Fatah and Hamas. Intra-Palestinian violence in the PA has reached unprecedented levels not necessarily in the quantity, but in the quality of attacks. In recent weeks, Palestinian factions have started targeting not only their rivals, but also their rivals’ families.

The crossing of this line has raised the concern that the PA will degenerate to full scale civil war. In the meanwhile, the violence has exposed extant cleavages in Palestinian society and, on a more basic level, the primal fears and concerns of many Palestinians. In this context, two developments bear mention:

Sunni-Shia Tensions in the Palestinian Authority: Although the number of Palestinian Shiites is negligible, a few weeks ago—after the killings of several high ranking Fatah officials and their families—signs of Sunni resentment toward Shiites started to emerge in the PA. In mid-December at a rally, Fatah loyalists chanted “shia, shia, shia,” referring to their Hamas rivals’ close ties to Iran. These chants materialized again on January 7, during a Fatah rally in a Gaza soccer stadium. Although both Fatah and Hamas are Sunni organizations, Fatah loyalists appear to be starting to view Hamas as tools of Iran, aligned with the Shia. Given some of the fatwas (religious edicts) emanating from Saudi Arabia—characterizing Shiites as “infidels”—the consequences could be profound in the PA.

Dinesh D'Souza: "It’s foolish to blame Islam when Islam has been around for 1,300 years and Islamic terrorism has been a problem for the past 25 years"

Dinesh D'Souza has written a spectacularly wrongheaded and potentially immensely damaging new book, The Enemy At Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11, in which he argues essentially that the jihadists hate us because we are immoral. It is, of course, already getting lavish attention from those who, out of political correctness and fear, as well as a miscalculation of the most effective ways to deal with the problem we face, have steadily ignored the jihad ideology and its influence among those who are waging war against the U.S. and its allies.

D'Souza showed up in a National Review Q & A with Kathryn Lopez yesterday, wherein he breezily discounted the possibility that they hate us because of imperatives arising from within the Islamic religion.

Lopez: On Islam: It has been argued that the Koran itself is violent. That moderate Muslims, in fact, have to distance themselves from more than Osama bin Laden. Is it possible that you are part of the not-understanding-the-threat-we-face problem by suggesting that line of examination be shut down?

Citizenships revoked to Bosnian Jihadists

Bosnia (FT) -- Under pressure from western states over fears it may become a European base for Islamic terror cells, Bosnia is revoking citizenship it granted to hundreds of foreign Muslims who came to the country to fight the Serbs and Croats in the wars of the 1990s. Many of the Johadists have married local Bosnian Muslim women.

The announcement that the first batch of passports had been cancelled coincided last week with the decision of a Bosnian court to convict four men of planning a bomb attack on an unspecified European target.

"So far we have revoked 330 citizenships," said Vjekoslav Vukovic, the head of a commission established to review the granting of about 1,500 passports since 1991.

"The majority of them are from African and Asian countries," Mr Vukovic said of the people whose citizenship had been revoked, adding that some 500 cases were still pending.

EU To Take Important New Step to Expand Counter Terrorism Police Work

By Victor Comras

EU Justice and Home Affairs Ministers agreed today to move ahead with plans to expand cross border police and judicial cooperation on an operational and information-sharing basis to combat terrorism, cross-border crime and illegal migration. Meeting in Dresden, Germany, the Ministers took up a plan proposed by German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schauble (Germany took over the EU presidency January 1, 2007) which would result in an EU-wide network of national data bases accessible by participating countries with regard to the investigation, prevention and prosecution of terrorism, cross border crime, and illegal immigration. The system would be based on that outlined in the 2005 Prum Treaty, which just came into force in November 2006. The Treaty, which was signed May 27, 2005, envisages a broad range of cross border cooperation including information exchange, sky marshalls, counter-terrorism cooperation, illegal immigration, repatriation, joint cross-border policing operations, and civil crisis management. This agreement may now be expanded to become part of the legal framework of the EU. However, this will require enactment of the Prum treaty language in the form of new EU legislation. The Prum Treaty’s current adherents are Austria Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain. Italy, Finland and Slovenia had also stated their intention to join the Treaty.

Islamization of Europe and Policies to Prevent It, Part 2

2.1 Introduction

Given the process above, a highly pertinent question is: What can prevent Islamization wars in European countries and the possible loss of traditional freedoms in the region ? The answer naturally lies in the number of immigrants from Muslim countries, and/or the success of their integration or assimilation.

If the immigrants leave that part of their traditional values which are hostile to non-Muslims and downgrade women, and start to think and behave like ordinary citizens in their respective countries, the danger has decreased. However, the multicultural policies in European countries cause failures regarding integration, and Europe is left with large unassimilated groups of sometimes angry and resentful people who don't understand and/or accept European values. Integration/assimilation is therefore the key to a peaceful future with freedom and human rights in Europe intact. Parallel societies can not be accepted because they automatically lead to violence and crimes against human rights where specially the rights of Muslim women are violated by Muslims. In the end, that violence will be turned towards the European population.

UK preacher in secret web call for jihad

Why Europe Abandoned Israel

By Richard Baehr

Why is Israel viewed so differently in Europe than in the United States? To argue as the title of this article does, that Europe has abandoned Israel, is to suggest that it was once in its corner. And in fact, this is true.

Prior to the Six Day War in 1967, it was France which was Israel's primary military supplier, not the United States. In the War of Independence in 1948-49, it was arms smuggled from Czechoslovakia that enabled the Zionists to fight on. Most European nations, including some Soviet satellites,  supported the partition resolution in the General Assembly in November 1947. European nations supported Israel at the UN through the late 1960s and in some cases well beyond then.

Clearly, some of this support in the post World War 2 period-was a reflection of European guilt over the murder of six million Jews in their midst from 1939 to 1945. As Raul Hilberg has written, most Europeans and most European nations fell into one of two categories during the Holocaust:  perpetrators, or bystanders. Few nations distinguished themselves (Denmark, Bulgaria, and maybe Italy, were better than average).

Pessimism in the Intelligence Community

The overwhelmingly negative assessment of the U.S. counter-terrorism strategy laid out by John Negroponte and other leaders of the intelligence community in the annual worldwide threat assessment was surprisingly under-reported.

But buried in the bleak assessment, one of the starkest in recent reports, was a realistic outline of the spreading threats on multiple Islamist fronts that we are facing.

The report was notable for its candor and the end to the happy talk that has often made its way into assessments on the struggle against the jihadist threat. What is amazing is that, five years and billions of dollars after 9-11, we are falling behind in the conflict. We are not even really competing in the field of ideas, and we have done little to mitigate the broader problems.

Part of the problem is that there is still no general consensus on who the enemy is and if a war exists. Until we decide that, little else of import can happen.

HS Future Terrorism Task Force findings: "Salafi Jihadism is the main threat"

By Walid Phares

The Task Force on Future Terrorism formed by the Homeland Security's Advisory Council (HSAC) released its findings today in Washington DC, in the presence of Secretary Chertoff, other US leaders and the media. In his remarks, Task Force chairman Lee Hamilton said the group expect al Qaeda and other Islamic radicals to continue to attempt to attack the US. He said motivations behind these potential attacks are "complex" and include extremist ideologies. He added that while it is impossible to predict with precisions, three elements are to be taken into consideration: Terrorists leadership, political and economic reform in the Muslim world and safe havens (as in Pakistan). Frank Cilluffo, the vice chairman of the Task Force said "home and prison radicalization is very important" in the growth of the threat. He mentioned that a "lexicon" has to be established to engage in the "battle of ideas."

The findings, as announced today, include a variety of assessments and recommendations. It is important that the community of counter terrorism experts review the findings and evaluate it, as they are now a basis for a policy discussion at the level of Government. Two CTB members were consulted during the research sessions: Steve Emerson and myself. Among the points raised by HSAC are the following issues related to the War of Ideas, along with my comments :

DEBKAfile: Kurdish sources report five helicopters carried US forces to pre-dawn raid of Iranian consulate in N. Iraqi town of Irbil

They were dropped on the roof while armored vehicles encircled the building. The troops used loudspeakers to call out in Farsi and Arabic to the consulate staff not to resist “or else they would be killed.” Five Iranian diplomatic staff members were detained and documents and computers impounded.

Tehran has strongly protested this breach of its sovereign territory and summoned the Swiss ambassador who represents US interests in Iran and the Iraqi ambassador to demand the immediate release of the Iranian diplomats.

Later Thursday, Jan. 11, Tehran reported three large explosions shaking the southern town of Khorramshahr north of the oil port of Abadan on the Shatt al-Arb waterway.

DEBKAfile: Khorramshahr, which faces the Iraqi town of Basra, is one of the key towns from which Iran delivers smuggled fighters, weapons and explosives to its Shiite supporters in Iraq. Our sources also report that some hours before President George W. Bush’s policy speech, a series of explosions were heard in Iranian Balochistan. Tehran imposed a blackout on the incident.

These statements and events tie in closely with the new Iraq strategy announced by the US president of confronting Iran and Syria for “allowing networks to use their territory to attack US forces.”

The controversial Muslim leader has again upset many Australians by telling an Egyptian television show that Muslims were more entitled to be in Australia than those with convict heritage.

On the program, he also reiterated his view that the furore which engulfed him when he likened women to uncovered meat was a conspiracy and that Australian courts were anti-Muslim.

Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone today told the sheik to respect Australia or stay away. Lees verder...

Supreme Court: Uppsala University Guilty of Anti-Swedish Discrimination

Late last month Uppsala University was found guilty of discrimination against Swedes by the Swedish Supreme Court (Högsta domstolen). Three years ago, the university refused to enroll Cecilia Lönn and Josefine Milander in its Law Faculty even though they had better grades than thirty other students with a foreign background.

In 2003, thirty of the available places for the law courses had been reserved for students with a foreign background. Cecilia Lönn and Josefine Milander, both with better grades than all of those thirty students who were allowed in, were refused by the university. The two young ladies sued the university. They won twice in lower courts. Now the Supreme Court, too, has ruled in their favor and ordered the university to pay them a compensation of SEK 75,000 (approximately €8,200). The court expenses they made, about SEK 41,000 (approximately $4,500), will be reimbursed by the state.

Bosnia Suicide Bomb Plotters Found Guilty (UPDATED)

By Evan Kohlmann

(*UPDATE*) News of the conviction has been officially confirmed by the Bosnian court.

According to eyewitness reports from Sarajevo, the Supreme Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina has found three defendants--Mirsad Bektašević, Abdulkadir Cesur and Bajro Ikanović--guilty on terrorism charges in a landmark case involving jihadists from across the European continent. The defendants had purchased explosives from a local source in Bosnia and allegedly planned to carry out suicide attacks against Western targets across Europe. The leader of the cell, Swedish national Mirsad Bektašević (a.k.a. “Maximus”) was initially based in Sweden and then traveled on to Bosnia “to plan an attack aimed at forcing Bosnia or another government to withdraw forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.” In a videotape recovered by Bosnian police, masked militants were shown building explosives while another individual—allegedly Bektašević himself—explained to the camera, “This weapon will be used against Europe, against those whose forces are in Iraq and Afghanistan… These two brothers ... have given their lives to God to help their brothers and sisters. We are here and we are planning and we have got everything ready.” Mobile phone records also showed that Bektašević was communicating with other known extremists based in Denmark and the United Kingdom. He was also believed to be running a recruitment operation sending young European jihadi recruits on to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq. Moreover, at least one of the suspects arrested in Bosnia-Herzegovina in connection with the Bektašević network was the former accountant of a financial front company run by veterans of the El-Mudzahedin Unit in Sarajevo and Zenica.

Danish imams. ..not "traitors".

But I can't see the difference.

Not Denmarks finest day. In fact I think it is probably one of the worst. The public prosecutor has dropped the case against the imams that went to all points middle-east and spread anti Danish propaganda after the publishing of the Motoons. The subsequent rioting and burning of Danish embassies is all too well documented to expand on here. The imams were being investigated on charges of treason, amongst other things, for travelling to the middle east with their case files full of the Motoons and a few home grown drawings too.
But according to the PP, the imams did nothing wrong or illegal. I can't get to grips with that. And it opens the door to further islamic activity directed against this country by people living in this country. What's more, the imams are already saying that they will repeat the procedure if they feel the need so to do. They are untouchable now.
Politiken, a leading Danish newspaper, has reported on the decision not to prosecute and published the response from the Society of Islamic Faith.
From that article, here's what the islamic mouthpiece, Kasem Said Ahmad, had to say: Lees verder...

Fjordman Essay: Is Islam Compatible with Democracy? part 3

"Hello from Fjordman. Here comes part 3 out of probably five essays comprising a booklet regarding Islam and democracy."

"I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them." The Koran, 8.12 "Allah's Apostle said, 'I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy)'" Hadith of Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220

He who strikes terror into others is himself in continual fear. Claudian (Roman poet)

In his Islamic Declaration from 1970, where he demanded a fully-fundamentalist Muslim state, future Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic wrote that "A Muslim generally does not exist as an individual. If he wishes to live and survive as a Muslim, he must create an environment, a community, an order. He must change the world or be changed himself. History knows of no true Islamic movement which was not at the same time a political movement as well."

How Arabs Think (Kuwait Times)

From Dr. Sami Alrabaa of the Kuwait Times (excerpts):
Some of us Arabs are polemic and demagogic. Either we love or hate. There is nothing in between. We are selective. We are masters of distorting facts. We pick out those ideas that suit us and deliberately ignore those that do not match our line of thinking. Differentiated thinking is unknown to us. Westerners who disapprove of the death penalty are abused by both Arabs who love Saddam Hussain and those who hate him. Ali Al-Baghli in Al-Qabas, Jan 6, rightly indicated that while Westerners disapprove of the death penalty out of the conviction that humans must not kill their fellow humans, they also condemn Saddam's appalling atrocities.

Arabs, whether they are democrats or totalitarians, wish their enemies to be smashed by all means. Our whole history has been stained by killing and murder. The four Caliphs after the death of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) were murdered. Pragmatism and compromise are alien to Arab culture. Either we love or we hate, and our enemy must be obliterated at all costs. Think of Iraq, Palestine, and Lebanon. The Arab states have never been governed by the rule of law and established institutions. The constitution is not worth the papers it is written on.

Lebanese public opinion

Zogby International and Shibley Telhami have just released findings from the Lebanon portion of their annual survey of Arab public opinion [PDF file].  The methodology on this one (unlike the al-Arabiya/YouGov one I mentioned yesterday) seems reasonably solid;  carried out November 11-16, 600 respondents, margin of error 4.1%.  All the results are broken down along sectarian lines (Shiite, Sunni, Christian, and Druze).   Here are some of the key findings:

  • Attitudes towards the United States remain very unfavorable.  Overall, 26% are very or somewhat favorable, 13% are somewhat unfavorable, and 52% very unfavorable.  96% of Shia, have unfavorable views of the US (87% very unfavorable) and  69% of Sunnis (52% very);  while the US as expected remains more popular among Christians (50% favorable) and Druze (60% favorable).

Analysis: A Theory of the Islamization Process in European Countries

"No Sharia" is the pen name of an academic who wishes to remain anonymous. He or she will be writing a series of articles on the process of Islamization now going on in Europe and will be offering political actions that could prevent the completion of said process. I've been impressed by the first installment of the series of articles and I've decided to follow his of her train of thought. I hope you'll follow along. The article is published at Islam Watch: A theory of the Islamization process in European countries

The Islamic takeover of a country or a region of the country - is dependant on the relative proportion of Muslims compared with non-Muslims, and/or the influence of militant Muslims among the Muslim population. A higher proportion of Muslims among the population - or the growth of the number of militants among Muslims (even though Muslims constitute a smaller part of the population) - drive the political development along a certain path. A successful assimilation process may change that path but there seems to be no definite examples yet of such a process.[...]

Fitzgerald: As "far-right" as Churchill

Some time ago Elaine Ganley, Associated Press Writer, referred to the French politician Philippe de Villiers as “a presidential hopeful who opposes Muslim immigration” and as a “far-right politician.” She wrote, with thinly disguised contempt, that de Villiers “claimed” to “base his book, ‘The Mosques of Roissy,’ on intelligence reports,” while “many saw the book as a publicity grab.”

This kind of coverage is typical. Philippe de Villiers is no more, and no less, "far right" than the late Democratic Senator Henry Jackson, or for that matter than the late Democratic Senator Hubert Humphrey, or William Proxmire, or any number of others. Philippe de Villiers is as "far right" as Raymond Aron, or Alexis de Toqueville, or Benjamin Constant. He is as "far right" as Jean Moulin, fighting the more obvious Fascists of the more obvious army, the Wehrmacht, in France.

Gaza's cyber cafés and music stores now sit on front line

Special to The Globe and Mail

GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP -- When a pipe bomb ripped through his Internet café late one night last week, Omar Otlah made a mental list of his known enemies.

After careful consideration, he ruled out an attack by the Israelis. Nor could he blame fallout from fighting between rival Palestinian factions, which has claimed more than 30 lives in the past month alone. This bombing was the work of a new foe, one that's been waging a much quieter war along an emerging front line that runs right through Gaza's bustling cyber cafés, music shops and universities.

The new group, calling itself the Swords of Islamic Righteousness, recently declared open war on any business, or Palestinian, it considers immoral. Among its targets: Internet cafés, for providing access to online porn; CD shops, for playing racy pop music; and pharmacies, for peddling drugs it deems recreational.

Palestinian culture in Gaza has always been more conservative compared with the West Bank. There are no bars and most women wear head scarves and long robes.

SNP pledges first Muslim state school in Scotland

LONDON: The Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) has pledged to build Scotland’s first state-funded Muslim school if it comes to power in May’s parliamentary elections. SNP leader Alex Salmond said he would instruct the Glasgow council, the local authority covering Scotland’s biggest Muslim communities, to ensure that Muslim parents’ demands for faith schools were met.

“We must listen to representations from within the Muslim community, in particular, and make full assessment of the demand for Muslim schools,” Salmond said. Further support was offered in the north eastern Scottish city of Dundee, where the country’s only private Muslim school was recently forced to close.

The city council’s education convener Kevin Keenan told Dundee’s Courier newspaper he shared “fairly similar views” to the SNP leader.

Imam will Moscheegegner von Heinersdorf verklagen

Report: Moroccan police arrest man for allegedly threatening teacher in France

(AP) PARIS: Moroccan police have arrested a man suspected of sending death threats to a French philosophy teacher who has been in hiding since September after airing his thoughts about Islam in a newspaper, the daily Le Parisien reported Tuesday.

The paper, citing sources close to the investigation, said the suspect, a Moroccan in his 20s, was arrested Dec. 19 in his home country after returning from a trip to Libya. He was trying to go to Iraq, Le Parisien said.

It was not immediately possible to verify the newspaper's report.

Robert Redeker, a high-school teacher in suburban Toulouse, southwest France, has been in hiding since shortly after he wrote an opinion piece criticizing Islam that was published in September in the daily Le Figaro.

Victory for Pigs: France Prohibits Soup

The French Conseil d’Etat, the highest administrative court in France, forbids private charities from distributing pork soup to the homeless. On Friday night the high court ruled that offering soup containing pork meat or lard is an act of racism because some of the homeless might be Muslims or Jews whose religion forbids the consuming of pork. The court said distributing pork soup threatens public order because it could spark angry reactions.

The Conseil d’Etat overruled last Tuesday’s decision by a Paris court of first instance that private charities are allowed to distribute whatever soup they please. Last December, the Paris police had issued a prohibition on the distribution to the homeless of “soupe au cochon” (pork soup), a traditional French dish, since some people in need might not be allowed to eat pork.

Britain's Huge Problem

In addition to Channel 4’s undercover exposé, British tabloid People has apparently done their own investigations into the prevalence of militant Islam in the UK, and their findings are not good at all: Brits Who Hate Us. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

One radical ABU WALEED appears in a talk about the 7/7 bus and Tube bombings in 2005. Quoting a recent survey, he says: “One in eight Muslims would be proud if a member of their family was a member of Al-Qaeda. The threat of Al-Qaeda is real.”

He adds: “One day we hope to implement Sharia law over Downing Street and Washington itself.”

Preacher ABU IBRAHIM makes a shocking reference to the revered Mother Theresa in a talk on the Day of Judgment. In a theme that crops up in other clips, he says all kuffars - non-Muslims - will be “dragged into hell fire by hooks”.

Did the US prevent Israel from kidnapping Hezbollah's #2?

By Olivier Guitta

According to a German intelligence report cited by the Kuwaiti daily Al Seyassah, US officials intervened to prevent Israel from "hijaking " the private Saudi plane transporting back to Beirut Naim Qassem, Hezbollah number 2 and MP Mohamed Fneich. Indeed the Hezbollah delegation met with Saudi King Abdullah on December 26 to discuss Lebanon. Still according to that report, the Mossad had learned about this trip and four Israeli fighter jets were preparing to intercept the plane in Lebanese airspace and make it land in Israel. But US authorities did not want to embarrass their Saudi "friends" and were afraid of the potential consequences of this action; that's why they strongly advised Israel against doing anything.

Arabiya's Arab public opinion survey

Al-Arabiya's program Panorama the other day discussed the results of a survey of Arab public opinion conducted with the British YouGov organization.  Conducted in December 2006, it surveyed 3113 people "from various Arab countries".  The results are presented over the course of a talk show, which means that I had to hunt through the transcript looking for numbers rather than having any easily readable report to draw on; if I find a link to the actual survey, I'll add it. (*)  Here are the major findings:

  • 81% of Arab respondents support Iran's position on the nuclear issue, while only 14% oppose the Iranian nuclear program.  87%  favor GCC states getting nuclear capabilities, though it's not clear exactly what that means.
  • 88% named Israel the "greatest threat to the security and future of the region", followed by the United States (no number given), al-Qaeda at 41% and then - finally -  Iran with 33%.   The al-Arabiya headline's spin:  "Iran is the greatest threat to the region in the eyes of Arabs, after Israel, the United States, and al-Qaeda."

Belgium: Muslim youths who threw stones at Jews forced to visit Anne Frank Museum

"This is not just a day out, this is about re-education. It will allow the youths to see for themselves how much suffering the Second World War caused." Very well. I hope it works. But I wonder if these "youths" will simply snicker behind their hands and praise the Nazi genocide among themselves -- certainly other Muslims in Europe have done so openly. It is not enough to show that Jew-hatred leads to human suffering; youths indoctrinated with Qur'anic Jew-hatred may well be impervious to signs of human suffering. That Qur'anic Jew-hatred in itself must be confronted if there is really going to be any effective "re-education." But no one dares do that.

DEBKAfile Reports: Fatah’s Mohammed Dahlan enlists Al Qaeda-linked Army of Islam for Abbas’ war against Hamas

The clash that erupted in the Sabra district of Gaza Saturday, Jan. 6, had all the hallmarks of clan combat between the pro-Hamas Deri and the pro-Fatah Durmush families Three Deiri gunmen were killed, two of them members of the Hamas special force.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources singles out this encounter as marking the further slide of the Hamas-Fatah showdown into dangerous waters. The Durmush clan commands the Army of Islam, the operational arm of al Qaeda in the Gaza Strip. It has now emerged that Abu Mazen’s lieutenant, Mohammed Dahlan, has hired the al Qaeda group to reinforce the Fatah war against Hamas.

On Dec.28, Hamas special forces’ gunmen sprayed a group of Palestinians in the center of Gaza with gunfire. The brothers Mohammed and Ashraf Durmush, who had been in talks to join the Fatah campaign, were killed. Aware of their error, Hamas leaders sought to arrange a sulha , promising the culprits would be detained and punished. They reneged on their promise. The Durmush clansmen – aka the Army of Islami - thereupon stepped up their attacks on Hamas targets, including the home of foreign minister Mahmoud A-Zahar.

UK: Blair's Total Ignorance About Islam

With a hat--tip to the National Secular Society, Britain's Prime Minister, Tony Blair, writes a long and rambling essay on the "Battle for Global Values" in Foreign Affairs magazine..

With the knowledge that Blair's government has encouraged the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, in the shape of Mockbul Ali's "Engaging With the Islamic World Group", to actively appease Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood, his Foreign Affairs article is unsurprising. The FCO has paid for Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who has issued a fatwa justifying the slaughter of Israeli civilians, to attend an Islamic conference in Turkey in summer.

Blair has allowed the extremists of the Muslim Council of Britain, an unelected body, to affect the policies of his elected government. And this despite the fact that its senior leaders have supported Osama bin Laden, the Islamofascist ideologue Sayyed Ala Maududi, and also the Jamaat-e-Islami, which committed atrocities against Hindu and Bangla civilians in Bangladesh's war for independence from Pakistan.

Secret video footage reveals Muslim preachers exhorting followers to prepare for jihad, to hit girls for not wearing the hijab, and to create a 'state within a state'. Many of the preachers are linked to the Wahhabi strain of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia, which funds a number of Britain's leading Islamic institutions.

Britain betrayed its partners in NATO to solve its domestic problems

By Ahmed Rashid in Islamabad

British policy in Afghanistan is seriously damaging Western efforts against the Taliban, diplomats from allied countries have warned.

Officials from the United States and European members of Nato have told The Daily Telegraph that Britain is increasingly at odds with its coalition partners over its policy of making arbitrary peace deals with the Taliban, while at the same time declining to put pressure on Pakistan to stop providing sanctuary to the Taliban leadership. ............

The reason, say diplomats, is the co-operation between MI6 and Pakistan's Interservices Intelligence (ISI) agency on Britain's domestic terrorist threat from British-born extremists of Pakistani origin.

"Even though British troops in Helmand are facing attacks from Pakistan-based Taliban, London is willing to sacrifice that issue in exchange for getting ISI help on its home-based terrorist problems," said a senior European official.

Australia: Muslim Mercenaries Or Traitors?

Australia over the past two years has been engaged in a debate over whether immigrant Muslims truly wish to integrate with Australian culture. The Treasurer, Peter Costello, has made several speeches in which he has said that people who wish for sharia law should leave.

The latest round of concerns about Australian identity being pitted against Muslim values involved Sheikh Taj Din al-Hilali of the Lakemba Mosque in Sydney, who bears the title of Australia's "mufti". Hilali's sermons are usually in Arabic, and rarely in English. One Arabic sermon was translated in October, where the Mufti compared women who did not not wear Muslim "coverings" to uncovered meat left out for "cats". He suggested that women who did not dress in Muslim fashion only encouraged men to rape them.

Two recent incidents once again highlight the dilemma which faces the Muslim community, where some of its members take on Australian citizenship yet have no intention of assimilation and integration.

France: resolution of Mideast conflict will not end global terror

France begins to awaken to the obvious. Global Islamic terrorism today arises from the jihad imperative within Islamic theology. It is absurd to assume in any case that terrorism in Indonesia or Kashmir would cease if the Israeli-"Palestinian" conflict were somehow resolved. But of course, that has never stopped anyone. From Israel Today, with thanks to Fjordman:

An official report published recently by the French government says that resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will not bring an end to the threat of global terrorism.

The report, named “Internal Security vs. Terror Threats” is an official publication of the French government. The report says that “since Europe is closer and more accessible to the Middle East than the United States, it serves as an alternative to anyone seeking to attack the “distant enemy.” Europe contains a variety of appropriate targets, some of which are connected with the United States and with Israel, and a strike on one or more of these targets would draw huge international attention.”

Islamlobby siegt - Suppenküche in Paris geschlossen

Iran and Al-Qaeda in Irak

Further evidence of Iran's support of the Shia death squads and Sunni al-Qaeda has emerged. At the end of December, two Iranian agents of the Quds force were arrested in a SCIRI compound in Baghdad. The Iraqi government was angry over the arrests, as the Iranians were part of a diplomatic delegation, and the agents were later released and deported.

But the Washington Post reported the two Iranian intelligence agents captured in Baghdad possessed "weapons lists, documents pertaining to shipments of weapons into Iraq, organizational charts, telephone records and maps, among other sensitive intelligence information... [and] information about importing modern, specially shaped explosive charges into Iraq." One was "the third-highest-ranking official of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' al-Quds Brigade."

The New York Sun described the documents as "the equivalent of Iran's Iraq Study Group" which "show how the Quds Force — the arm of Iran's revolutionary guard that supports Shiite Hezbollah, Sunni Hamas, and Shiite death squads — is working with individuals affiliated with Al Qaeda in Iraq and Ansar al-Sunna." "We found plans for attacks, phone numbers affiliated with Sunni bad guys, a lot of things that filled in the blanks on what these guys are up to," an intelligence official told the New York Sun.

Palestinian Arabs killing each other - in 1938

The hundreds of murders of Palestinian Arabs by other Palestinian Arabs that I have been documenting for the past six months is nothing new. A very similar situation occurred from 1936-39.

The Arabs of Palestine tried on a few occasions in the 1920s and 1930s to rise up and destroy the Jews of Palestine, and things were very bad in 1936. Yet no matter what they did, the Jewish influence on the area kept increasing, Jews kept arriving and Jewish institutions thrived.
They then started killing each other in earnest. I'm not sure why - perhaps it was frustration at their impotence, perhaps because an entire generation had been raised to praise Arab murderers as heroes and therefore bloodshed itself became considered desirable, or maybe they simply started misplacing their hatred for Jews and the British onto any Arab that was too Western for their tastes. Nationalism and religion seems to have played a part but more as excuses rather than as root causes.

Either way, the amount of lawlessness that ensued looks very familiar to those of us who have been following "clan clashes" and the Fatah/Hamas civil war. Especially notice how many Arabs were killed for not wanting to join in with the terrorists, or for speaking out against the terrorists. Also note the left column, dealing only with the terror crimes of the previous day.

Radical Islam And British Universities: Part One

by Adrian Morgan

NafiBritish Universities have long been centers of radicalism, usually of the brand of amateur socialism espoused by the Socialist Workers Party or its ugly sisters the Worker's Revolutionary Party and Militant. Pretending to understand Dialectical Marxism and Trotskyite "permanent revolution", the leftist radicals infested, and still infest, campuses across Britain.

Since the 1970s, these leftists have promoted the myth of Palestinian perpetual martyrdom, and portrayed Israel as a bogeyman. During the 1980s, they supported the unwashed women who camped rough outside RAF Greenham Common, a US-linked air base in Bedfordshire, Britain. Though ignored by most students, activists promoted an agenda of anti-Americanism and anti-semitism that has infected at least two generations of post-graduates.

Radical Islam And British Universities: Part Two

By Adrian Morgan

In 1994, the Indian High Commissioner, L. M. Singhvi, claimed that Muslim students at British colleges and universities were being recruited by Islamist terror groups in India. The London School of Economics and the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies were claimed to be places where students were particularly susceptible to such recruitment.

After followers of Hizb ut-Tahrir murdered Ayotunde Obanubi on Monday February 27, 1995, at Newham College of Further Education, repercussions ensued. The National Union of Students banned the group from its meetings in the same year. In 1996, Omar Bakri Mohammed either resigned or was expelled from the British Hizb ut-Tahrir group which he had founded.

UK: Cartoon rage protestor found guilty of soliciting murder

Justice for Umran Javed. "Cartoons protester found guilty," from the BBC, with thanks to PRJ:

A British Muslim has been found guilty of soliciting murder during a London rally against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

Umran Javed was also convicted of using words likely to stir up racial hatred at the February 2006 protest by the jury at the Old Bailey.

Javed, 27, of Birmingham, had said: "Bomb, bomb Denmark, bomb, bomb USA."

Javed had claimed his chants against the two countries were "just slogans" and that he "regrets" saying them.

Remanding him in custody, Judge Brian Barker said he would not pass sentence until several other trials relating to the protest had concluded - expected to be in April.

The maximum penalty for soliciting murder is life in prison.

Iran suspends supplying natural gas to Turkey

Iran has stopped supplying natural gas to Turkey to meet increasing demand at home this winter, state-run radio reported on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately, we stopped supplying gas to Turkey while having a contract with them to meet domestic demand that was rising due to the cold weather," state-run radio quoted Iran's oil minister, Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh, as saying.

Hamaneh did not give a timeline for when Iran - a major supplier of natural gas to Turkey along with Russia - would start resupplying Turkey with natural gas. But the oil minister encouraged Iranians to take measures to reduce their consumption of natural gas, the radio said.

Spanish bishops fear rebirth of Islamic kingdom

By Elizabeth Nash in Madrid

Published: 05 January 2007

Spain's bishops are alarmed by ambitious plans to recreate the city of Cordoba - once the heart of the ancient Islamic kingdom of al-Andalus - as a pilgrimage site for Muslims throughout Europe.

Plans include the construction of a half-size replica of Cordoba's eighth century great mosque, according to the head of Cordoba's Muslim Association. Funds for the project are being sought from the governments of the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, and Muslim organisations in Morocco and Egypt.Other big mosques are reportedly planned for Medina Azahara near Cordoba, Seville and Granada.

The bishops of those cities are alarmed at the construction of ostentatious mosques, fearing that the church's waning influence may be further eclipsed by resurgent Islam financed from abroad. Up to one million Muslims are estimated to live in Spain. Many are drawn by a romantic nostalgia for the lost paradise of Al-Andalus, the caliphate that ruled Spain for more than five centuries.

Hizbollah Holds Talks with Saudi King: Source

Hezbollah deputy chief Sheikh Naim Kassem and a senior aide, Mohammed Fneish, flew to Jeddah on a private Saudi jet on Dec. 26 for the meeting with the monarch and his foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, the senior political source said.

The three-day visit was aimed at easing tension between the mainly Sunni Muslim kingdom and Hizbollah, which is leading an opposition campaign to bring down the Beirut government.

More Hypocrisy from Germanistan

The Duisburger Institut für Sprach- und Sozialforschung (DISS) (Duisburg Institute for Language- and Social Studies), which is affiliated to Duisburg university and thus a recipient of public funds, is considered a vanguard for and paragon of politically correct discourse and stands for everything that is considered good and valiant in Germany: Fighting right wing extremism, fighting racism, fighting antisemitism, fighting right wing extremism oh yes, and did I mention fighting right wing extremism?

Such an unholy trinity suggests smokescreening per se and, to be blunt, to me it seems as if DISS is broaching the issue of right-wing antisemitism to deflect from the antisemitism of the Left.

Why do I think that? First, because anti-Zionist Moshe Zuckermann seems to blend in seamlessly with the otherwise laudable criticism of antisemitic clichés about Israel in the German media, but hey, maybe it's just intellectual sluttery.

What I find more conclusive (and, frankly, well nigh incredible) is the fact that Irmgard Pinn is a member of DISS' advisory board. Lees verder...

Europe being democratic??

With the ever closer integration of European countries into a single EU(ssr), it was bound to happen: In the US people are sitting up and wondering outloud what the EU is: friend or adversary?

One of the best summaries of the situation I have seen (via Het Vrije Volk) appeared on the Heritage Foundation site.
U.S. policymakers have been remarkably slow to grasp that the supranational institutions of the new top-down Europe (to which the once independent European states have ceded sovereignty) are remarkably undemocratic. In the judgment of a former E.U. commissioner, it is clear that if the E.U. applied to itself the criteria that it recently applied to all new members, it could not be admitted to the E.U. because it is insufficiently democratic!
It is not the first time the accusation of the anti-democratic nature was leveled against the EU. Nor will it be the last time, because the voices levelling the accusations are growing in number. Lees verder...

A Strategy for the Long War

Posted By Grim

It has become common to say that there is no overarching strategy for the Long War.  In the post below, I'd like to propose one.  It joins together what I think are the best ideas out there, for creating a kind of world where:

*  Terrorist groups are smaller and less dangerous

*  Rogue states have more rather than less to fear

*  Genocide and ethnic cleansing are rarer

*  The enforcement of human rights is more certain.

All of this is possible without vastly increasing the size of the military, or invoking a draft.  This is a long post, so get some coffee.

I want to begin with an article that Chap mentioned at MilBlogs.  I said at the time it was the best thing I've read on the kinds of changes we need to bring to the war.  It is that, but let me say why I think so, and elaborate on some of the good concepts at work in the article.

What is the European Union good for?

by Adrian Morgan
Source: The Family Security Foundation, Inc.

morgan

The European Union has become a top-heavy bureaucracy far removed from its origins. Originally there were the Benelux nations - Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg - which had a policy of free trade with each other. The Benelux nations were joined with West Germany, France and Italy in the "European Coal and Steel Community", or ECSC, founded in 1951. In 1957, the Treaty of Rome was signed by these nations, paving the way for a "common market" and creating the European Economic Community (EEC) and European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM).

In 1967, these bodies coalesced to form the European Community (EC). A European Parliament was formed, with a Council of Ministers. Britain joined the EC in 1973, as did Denmark and Ireland. There were expansions in 1981, 1986, and also in 1995. Malta, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Cyprus joined in 2004. The most recent additions to the EU are Romania and Bulgaria, which join on January 1, 2007. These will bring the total member nations of the EU to 27.

Iran's Secret Plan For Mayhem

By ELI LAKE
Staff Reporter of the Sun
January 3, 2007

WASHINGTONIran is supporting both Sunni and Shiite terrorists in the Iraqi civil war, according to secret Iranian documents captured by Americans in Iraq.

The news that American forces had captured Iranians in Iraq was widely reported last month, but less well known is that the Iranians were carrying documents that offered Americans insight into Iranian activities in Iraq.

An American intelligence official said the new material, which has been authenticated within the intelligence community, confirms "that Iran is working closely with both the Shiite militias and Sunni Jihadist groups." The source was careful to stress that the Iranian plans do not extend to cooperation with Baathist groups fighting the government in Baghdad, and said the documents rather show how the Quds Force — the arm of Iran's revolutionary guard that supports Shiite Hezbollah, Sunni Hamas, and Shiite death squads — is working with individuals affiliated with Al Qaeda in Iraq and Ansar al-Sunna.

So meint z.B.

The administrative court said the distribution was “clearly discriminatory,” but could not be stopped because the organizers offered to feed anyone who asked for help.

Links Between Terrorism, Drug Trade, and Illegal Immigration Can't Be Ignored

By Michael Cutler

Here is an article that was written several days ago by Sara Carter, this year's recipient of the Eugene Katz Award presented by the Center for Immigration Studies, the think tank with which I have been affiliated for the past several years. Sara is an excellent journalist and her article, that I have attached below is important for you to read. It makes it clear that our nation's failure to secure its borders and create an immigration system that possesses true integrity imperils nothing less than the security of our nation and the survival of our citizens. Sara saw fit to include a brief quote that I provided to her and indeed, what I said in that quote sums up the situation quite succinctly: "The bureaucrats don't understand what a dangerous game they are playing with American lives if they don't do something to fix the situation at the border."

There is another statement made in the article that is especially disturbing. Not surprisingly, this statement bears no attribution. Any government employee who would be willing to be quoted for having said it had better have a new job lined up: "Those interviewed by the Daily Bulletin say agencies including the FBI and CIA are not using information from Border Patrol and Drug Enforcement Administration agents to make connections between the drug trade, illegal immigration and terrorist organizations."

Kosovo Serb shot for reclaiming own home

January 2, 2007 -- A Kosovo Serb, Vladimir Radosavljevic and his wife Bosiljka were shot at in the Kosovo Muslim Albanian stronghold of Klina after Radosavljevic filed papers with the Kosovo Housing and Property Directorate to have his illegally confiscated home returned.

Radosavljevic's were asleep when unidentified gunmen fired a round from an automatic weapon at their temporary shelter in Kosovo town of Klina where they were awaiting the authorities to evict the illegal Muslim Albanian occupiers of their property.

Police found 23 bullets among the broken glass and empty chargers in the street. The evidence, according to the police, suggests that the attackers used a Kalashnikov AK-47 in the shooting. Radosavljevic's were then evacuated from the premises by the police and placed in the apartment of their relatives in downtown Klina. Police made a statement that an investigation is in progress.

Hizb-ut-Tahrir's Growing Appeal in the Arab World

By James Brandon
Hizb-ut-Tahrir (or Hizb al-Tahrir) is an ostensibly non-violent Islamic political movement dedicated to the recreation of a global caliphate. Although founded in Jordanian-ruled Jerusalem in 1953, it has traditionally been strongest in Europe and Central Asia. Today, however, it is becoming increasingly popular in the Arab world [1]. Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HT) works covertly to convince Muslims to overthrow their present governments peacefully and establish a worldwide caliphate, which will then impose conservative Islam over all Muslim majority countries. Once this is accomplished, HT hopes that the caliphate will make the whole world Islamic through conversion in the first instance and, as a last resort, offensive jihads against all non-Muslim states. HT is highly organized and has national leaderships as well as an overall leader, Abu Rashta, who lives in secret in Lebanon. The group says that it will take power peacefully by persuading influential members of the elite to overthrow the government. The organization is illegal in all Arab countries except for Lebanon, Yemen and the UAE where it is tolerated. The group does not believe in using either elections or violence to take power and there is no evidence that HT members have carried out any attacks in the Arab world. There is mounting evidence, however, that HT is growing in popularity in the Arab world. Lees verder...

800,000 Turks Become EU Citizens

How will they change the character of the EU? How many of them sympathize with the jihadists? How many of them are working with the jihadists? I have no answers to those questions, but I do have the answer to another: how many EU officials were considering such questions as the decisions that allowed for this were made? Zero.

From Zaman via AINA, with thanks to News4U:

As Bulgaria and Romania join the European Union today, nearly 800,000 Turks and one million Muslims will become EU citizens.

The number of Turks in Europe will rise to six million and Europe's Muslim population rises to 16 million.

The European press focused on the fact that Bulgaria's Muslim population comprises 12 percent of the population.

Discrimination against Muslims is on the rise in these countries, ever since the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

Turkish-origin Bulgarian citizens often emphasize that Islam is not 'a religion of terror.'

It's not about Israel

A number of voices in the international community have recently identified the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the root cause of many of the Middle East's problems. British Prime Minister Tony Blair and outgoing UN Secretary General Kofi Annan have been among the most prominent of these voices.

In his article "A battle for global values," (Foreign Affairs, January/February 2007), Tony Blair reiterates what he has expressed in previous public statements: "How can we bring peace to the Middle East unless we resolve the question of Israel and Palestine?" Achieving peace, he continues, "would not only silence reactionary Islam's most effective rallying call but fatally undermine its basic ideology."

Kofi Annan, addressing the UN Security Council on December 12, said, "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not just one regional conflict amongst many. No other conflict carries such a powerful symbolic and emotional charge even for people far away."

Somalia's Islamic Courts Fighters Abandon Kismayo

01 January 2007

Somalia's interim governments says it has captured the Islamic Movement's last stronghold, following a night of intense Ethiopian artillery bombardment near Kismayo. VOA correspondent Alisha Ryu reports hard-line Somali Islamist leaders and their fighters abandoned their last stronghold early Monday, possibly retreating to a base near the Kenyan border.

Witnesses in the southern port of Kismayo say several thousand Islamist fighters simply disappeared Monday, after Ethiopian artillery pounded their front-line positions the night before in the town of Jilib, 45 kilometers to the north.

Senior Islamist leaders, including the radical head of the Islamic Courts Union Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, had retreated to Jilib from Mogadishu last Thursday, after advancing Ethiopian and Somali government troops forced them to abandon the capital they had held since June.

2007: Strategic Thinking Needed in Fighting Global Jihad

By Jeffrey Imm

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

The recent reports about a lack of understanding of the role of individual Islamic groups in Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda by the new House Intelligence Panel Chairman and lack of knowledge of Sunni/Shiite groups by some FBI counterterrorism executives are not "isolated incidents". Nor is the limited number of FBI agents with Arabic language skills - five years after 9/11 - an "isolated problem". While these stories may exaggerate the limitations and educational challenges in such groups, they highlight the problem for American government in prioritization of education and resources, due to lack of a fundamental blueprint and analysis in understanding the larger problem of Jihad and global Islamist extremism. This lack of a blueprint prevents the government leadership from effectively evaluating options and priorities.
