Een frontale aanval. Iets anders valt er niet te maken van de speech die superbelegger George Soros gisteren aan de Humboldt Universiteit in Berlijn hield. In het hol van de leeuw verweet Soros de Duitsers “de Europese Unie in gevaar brengt” met hun dogmatische benadering van het wegwerken van het begrotingstekort. In plaats van een verantwoordelijke rol op zich te nemen, die past bij de positie van Duitsland in de eurozone, trapt Duitsland op de rem.
Duitsland, stelt Soros, behandelt de rest van Europa zoals de Griekse herbergier Procrustes zijn gasten behandelde: zij die te kort waren voor het bed werden uitgerekt en van hen die te lang waren werden de benen afgezaagd.

Last week a small crisis with potentially serious implications blew up between Israel and Turkey. Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon summoned Turkish Ambassador to Israel Ahmet Oguz Celikkol to a meeting Jan. 11 to protest a Turkish soap opera that depicted Israeli agents kidnapping Palestinian children. When the ambassador arrived, he received a lower seat than Ayalon — and was photographed in that position, making it appear that Ayalon was speaking to an inferior. Ayalon wouldn’t shake hands with him during the televised parts of the meeting, and had an Israeli flag visible on the table. Topping it all off, Ayalon told an Israeli cameraman in Hebrew that the important thing was that people see Celikkol sitting down low “while we’re up high.”

Jewish-Palestinian community in Israel claiming to be "engaged in
educational work for peace, equality, and understanding between the two
peoples," dutifully commemorates Nakba Day.

It is more than a little ironic that Nato has committed itself to defining a new strategic concept at precisely the moment the transatlantic relationship counts for less than at any time since the 1930s.
In part this development reflects Europe's success. While Europe was the central arena for much of 20th- century history and a principal theatre for both world wars and the cold war, it now is mostly at peace. The Franco-German rift has been replaced by a broader integration of the continent inside the European Union, with France and Germany at its core. Europe is to a large extent whole and free. What happens within it will not determine the arc of the 21st century.

The slaughter is remembered as the Dobrovoljacka Street Massacre and it happened on May 3, 1992.
“Ganic was in the role of the supreme commander of the [Bosnian Muslim] army,” said Delimustafic and named others who were in Ganic’s cabinet.
Serbia wants Ganic extradited from the UK where he is being held in order for him to stand trial.
